Things that really bother you

Real life as related to SDF...

It is my experience in nearly twelve years in this forum that political discussion just brings out the worst in our fine well intentioned members.

Personally I'm sick of it. I am. Truly I am. Since the election of Pres. Trump the anti-US rhetoric has ratcheted up quite a bit in this forum. Out and out hatred in some cases disguised with a layer of sarcasm & wit.

I'm tried of it.
This is a defense forum. It attracts certain type of people here. All of us here are interested if not passionate about politics in one way or the other. Its hard to keep your passions under wraps.

As for Obama. I don't think anyone here on SDF likes Obama. Trump is in office only for a few days so I will withhold my comments on him for now. I always say that you need to give a leader at least 2 years the time to show what he can do. But things at the moment doesn't look good.

Popeye, you are on the mark.

1) Woo Hoo girls… Is this some desperate call for attention? Or is it just the mating call of the North American college girl?

2) Lazy people. Absolutely, and I will take it a step further. Here at the office young engineers are hired to begin their training and learn the trade. However, these young men do not want to work, do not want advice, and have a sense of entitlement that they should earn as much as senior engineers that have been in the business for 30-years+

3) The way people dress. Arhhhhhhh…..What is with all the Tattoos (I am not talking one or two small ones). But all over your body. Young boys dress like derelicts and young girls dressing like “street corner working girls”.

4) I cannot agree with you more on your item 7. All these people that blame everyone but themselves for their situation. It is so refreshing to find someone that is responsible for their own actions.

Thanks I feel better now.

PS: I won’t hug you when I meet you.

I will now get back to bottling my Malbec
Well the AFB likes a nice hug,
Especially from chicks, love me all.

Pan, my grip was targeted at what I felt was use of a lighter fare thread to become a hard news, oped thread because the moderators had closed the breaking news thread or it was felt that the thread was an excaptable place for political postings, when as intended it was not. And as the creator of that thread I would like to state that my aim was never what it became.
I pointed to the US and Japan as the most common subjects of such particularly in topics that have repeatedly been judged as inappropriate for other threats it is often that they pop up in that thread complete with posts and comments.

As for rhetoric.
Fact, this is a US hosted forum.
Fact, opinions will very and as a US hosted forum we have US members who will veiw the PRC with suspicion.

Fact, being skeptical of the Chinese communist party IE the Government of China does not nor should not necessarily represent racism, or anti Chinese sentiment. The party is not the people despite what they claim.

And the same holds true for Trump. He is a unknown quantity. He aspires to hope but has some doubious points, and the Obama administration conducted a number of political moves that ran hard counter to established bipartisan us policy and boilerplate. Overall however Trump has been in office for only 10 days. Simply put he has yet to even show just what kind of President he is. I did not vote for him, more did I vote for Clinton as I am skeptical of both. However I see and hear vehement if not venomous anti Trump rhetoric on a daily basis, the majority of the contents of which boarding on or beyond irrational.

I agree with you about the WTH thread and I too am annoyed by the increasing number and degree of bias of political posts and the decreasing space for light hearted chitchat.

The reasons for expectations you brought up regarding rhetoric goes both ways.

Fact is this is a defence forum about China, or specifically the PRC, so there will be members who see the PRC as doing the right thing, for their country or party or people.

Fact is the US has a history through the current day of colonialism and self-serving interference around the world including with regards to China so it is reasonable that there are members who look at US actions or intentions with suspicion. Same thing with Japan and several other countries.

Fact is the US is a pluralistic country which regularly goes through changes of government so a particular president, administration, policy, or action does not necessarily reflect the preferences of all Americans. Disagreement with the particulars of any of the above is exactly that and does not represent overall anti-US sentiment about either the country or the people.

This forum is special in that it is a defence forum which is not a one-sided soapbox for anyone nor is it a constant flame war so there actually are opportunities to see meaningfully different opinions. However this balance is being disrupted by real life tensions heating up around some of the forum's topics which corresponds with the slide towards political attacks and ranting. Hopefully everyone can rein themselves in a bit.
