I haven't paid too much attention towards Ukraine thread. What is the latest issue that causes the thread to be shut down? I thought forum members have learned their lessons. Most important thing for the Ukraine thread is to ensure the discussion should be steer away from political.

I think people need to accept that right or wrong is sometime judgemental and personal. We should avoid discussing the moral right or wrong of the war as it is clear that no one is going to convince anyone otherwise. It is very difficult for Mods to intervene in a discussion of moral issues. Since people can easily get emotional when it came down to political and morality, it is best to avoid such discussion as much as possible.

Shutting down the Ukraine thread to cool off the tension is perfectly fine. Although, the Ukraine conflict won't go away anytime soon. If the war escalated in the coming months, I am doubtful our forum can stay clear of such discussion.

I personally very rarely wrote posts in the ukraine war thread. And those few times that i did were all very short posts. I am not interested in lengthy discussions.
However, i am a member of various other forums and for all the deficiencies of this particular sdf thread, it was still the best source of daily up to date information from both sides in a single place. Bettering all the other forums i've seen, which were either be too prorussian or too proukranian. This sdf thread managed to walk that fine line between the two. Sure, there was a lot of nationalistic drivel here as well, but one learns to ignore that and just focuses on extracting useful bits of info. For that reason, the thread closing is an unfortunate event. It may have had its bad sides, but the thread actually had more value than most similar threads on various other forums.

Just a question. If the mods are unable to handle the Ukraine thread… then in a hypothetical scenario what should we expect over a Taiwan scenario?

For all the neocons/warmongers saying that the Ukraine is a rehearsal for Taiwan. Seems like the Ukraine thread could also be a rehearsal for a Taiwan thread which will be a 100x magnitude worst for discussion in general.

Unless our moderation plan is to ignore the “mushroom cloud” outside the window when (or if as it seems more unlikely) that time comes.

There are a lot of posts in this thread, so I'll address them in one go.

First and foremost, the decision to shut down the thread temporarily was agreed to by everyone in the World Affairs team, not the super mods, including Deino.

Secondly, the warning system was set up to give users numerous chances to correct their behavior and treat others like humans. However, it was very clear that many users didn't care whether or not we gave warnings to them or delete their posts for being low-grade one liners with zero evidence, sarcastic mockery of Russians and Ukrainians, chest thumping bs when they can't make a good argument, off topic posts and etc.

Finally, it wasn't shut down for political reasons. Users from both pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian sides love to dog on us for being biased, but the truth of the matter is we aren't. Simple as that, so please, for the lack of a better term, stay quiet and stop whining.

We do plan to reopen this thread, but we are rapidly making changes to our warning system before opening the floodgates. I know there are users out there who did abide the rules, and on the behalf of the mod team, thank you very much. However, unfortunately, there are others out there who can't just take the hint. Once the ruleset is agreed upon, we will swiftly implement the changes, and let everyone know asap.

Not sure about you, but I'll totally be spending my last days moderating the forum when the ICBMs start falling:

I mean this forum is a great resource for military discussion, but obviously it attracts a certain type that may be more zealous than others. Shortly before the thread was locked, there really was just pages after pages of combat footage with a small amount of commentary sprinkled in between since front movement was so slow.

If it was ever reopened please consider making users only able to post once every few hours as to reduce mod workload and keep content high effort.

You didn't answer why the rule only applies in the Ukrainian war thread.

Also, if senior moderators can't follow the rules, how can you expect regular posters to?

You didn't answer why the rule only applies in the Ukrainian war thread.

The rule also applies in other threads and categories, especially the military thread categories.

It is generally the exception whereby a degree of political-tangent posts are allowed, in the non-military threads, or in exceptional topics that have very close proximity to this forum's user base (such as the Hong Kong 2019 thread).

Given Ukraine is an active conflict that is actively ongoing in a violent manner, emotionally and politically charged in the real world and online, and of debatable direct relevance to this forum, yes, the leash will be kept tight on that thread.

Also, if senior moderators can't follow the rules, how can you expect regular posters to?

I have yet to see any posts from moderators in that thread which are not a result of others posting casting the first stone in an exchange.

My advice is to be grateful that the moderating team at large are even allowing this topic to remain on the forum to begin with.
It's always possible that one day the topic is entirely banned from the forum if it becomes more trouble than it's worth.
