The French connection

One thing that I noticed is overlooked here is the French presence in the
S. Pacific and its future possible impact on China, Australia, and the USA. As a leading European nation and parmament memeber of the UN SC, France is also a Pacific nuclear power. In the past, the French was supplying Taiwan the Mirage fighters, but now they are eager to sell arms to the Mainland China.

The French navy is a very capable force, but I don't think any of it is really deployed in the Pacific and although France has had pocessions in the Pacific for a long time I don't think they have ever been invloved in a war (Aside from Japanese occupation of New Caledonia (I think) in WWII.)

Dont forget the French-Veitnam war in the late fifties. That's what got us Americans into that mess (though the French are hardly to blame).

The Americans supported the French so they could keep Indochina as a colony to plunder it rather to depend 100% on the Marshall Plan. I guess it was tit-for-tat: without the French Navy's support in the 1700s there probably wouldn't be the US now!

Our territories were involved in WWI, WWII and Indochina.

Today, our main territories are: New Caledonia (with big mineral ressources and a big deal of political problems), Wallis and Futuna, and Polynesia.

Polynesia used to be a strategicaly important possession: we had there our nuclear test sites: Moruroa and Fangataufa (we had quite bad relationships with Australia because of that).

Our forces are under the command of the ALPACI, the Admiral responsible for all the Pacific french forces (but New Caledonia). We usually don't have any main vessel nor important air and land unit.

Historical notice:
During the 19th and early 20th centuries our colonies were involved in the wars against China and in the chinese civil war.
Bases all across the Pacific supported the war against Germany during WWI (mainly maritime operation and a few amphibious ones).
New Calodonia and Tahiti joined the Free France in 1940.
US troops used the french soil to support the allies in western Pacific.
Japan invaded Indochina in 1940-41.
The Indochina war began in 1945-46 and came to an end in 1954.

That's the rampant Fifties-Era Anti-Communist Paranoia working it's magic! I have all the respect in the world for the French, though.

France is being friendly to both China & Japan-a close ally of the US. In case of a conflict between those 2 + Taiwan will France stay neutral or share intel with the PLA?

France's policy is to counter attack agressors. It will depends of the situation, so China is disavantaged because they haven't Military Alliance with France.
