A 5th Arleigh Burke is on its way to the mediterranean

Which ship? Will you post a link? I cannot find any. Thanks!

This Just in...it sucks to remain on station when you thought you were heading home..I would not be surprised to see one of the ships, more than likely Truman to be sent back through the Suez and off the Syrian coast as someone suggested.

WASHINGTON

U.S. officials say the Navy is beefing up its presence in the Persian Gulf region, increasing the number of aircraft carriers from one to two.

The Norfolk-based Harry S. Truman has arrived in the Arabian Sea and was scheduled to take the place of the Nimitz, which was supposed to head home. The Navy has ordered the Nimitz, which is in the Indian Ocean, to stay for now.

U.S. officials describe the decision as prudent planning and say it doesn't suggest the carrier would play a role in any possible strikes in Syria. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss ship movements publicly.

The U.S. had kept two carriers in the region, but budget cuts in February forced officials to cut that to one.

The 5th DDG is USS Stout DDG-55 there is speculation it will replace USS Mahan but it seems like its a 5th addition rather than a replacement

Re: Persian Gulf & Middle East News & Views

If there is a attack on Syria, Iran will not back down and Hezbollah will open a second front

Russia is not going to go easy this time, they are 100% standing by Assad no matter what and they seem hell bent on saving him

Putin is also threatening Saudis, Russia has no intention of letting this one go they have invested too much in Syria for too long

What happens if Russia starts positioning its ships off the coast of Syria and try's to block any attack? Even if a Russian vessel is hit by accident the situation will escalate

Thanks for sharing Asif. If the information about the Saudi-Russian exchange is true then this whole situation is a totally different ballgame. Defcon 1 anyone?

That would be the Moskva and she is already in the Med. Only bad things will come if a Harpoon or a Tomahwak strikes her either intentionally or unintentionally.

Obama need to lay this one off IMHO. Let the Russians sort this out with the Iranians etc. Assad does NOT pose a national security threat to the US/UK or Europe. Heck Assad's wife is/was a UK citizen herself.

He may be a murderous tyrant BUT anti Western//White/Christian etc Islamist he is not.

Re: Persian Gulf & Middle East News & Views

Ok this is getting crazier everyday. There hasn't been this much tension between the US and Russia since the Cold War days and the Cuban Missile Crisis. I wasn't born during the Kennedy years but I'm sure some of you older members do remember the intensity of it all.

Well let's remember one thing, the Russians dispatched the Cruiser and anti-submarine ship before the UK paraliment rejected a military action

As a matter of fact 6 x Typhoons from the RAF just today arrived at Cyprus and with AWACS and intel aircraft, and just few days ago Russia mobilised its Black Sea Fleet

This shows how far Russia is willing to go, the Europeans and Americans must have sent in close to 25-30 warships there some of them the worlds most advanced, two carrier battle groups were on station air assets have been arriving at various locations and UK seemed committed and so did France

Yet Russia never blinked, they gave chase alright sending in one of thier most powerful vessels, I have no doubt in my mind Russia could be overwhelmed by the vast number of ships opposing them but the fact they refused to let down Assad and send in thier own navy just reminded everyone else that it's not a one way street and that Russia is ready to go the distance

If UK voted for war then Russia was committed, no way they would allow thier vessels to be hit and them do nothing, it's a war anything can happen and accident can lead to a direct confrontation between the West and Russia

Russias entry into this whole conflict raised the stakes, raised them to a level which I have never seem before, a direct naval build up between two heavy weights

I think this has just reminded everyone that the old bear still has a roar and that Russia can still pull some very serious cards in a tough game of poker

The Brits just bowed out. Their parliament voted against taking part in any military action against Syria.

Yep. It's the first time in over 100 years that the UK government had been defeated this way in its attempts to authorise war.

But the White House had just indicated that they are willing to go it alone, not an ace move politically, but there's no backing out now after Obama drew the 'red line'.
