What could have gone wrong with her after the 200m freestyle heats? Li Bingjie who skipped the 200m freestyle and then showed up healthy in the 200m freestyle relay, was similar to Messi who skipped Hong Kong match, and then showed up healthy in Japan match.
It was all part of a plan.
Seems you really don't understand sports. I actually don't follow swimming and I don't watch interviews for behind the scenes information. But I do watch weightlifting. When you ask, "What could have gone wrong?" I immediately thought of 3 weightlifting events. 1 where the Chinese world champ and world record holder suddenly dropped because he had sudden muscle cramps in the warm up room, the second when a female Chinese lifter miraculously defended her title despite experiencing an unexpected fever, and the last where a world record holder pulled out mid comp because he was feeling dizziness and light-headed. Athletes' bodies are primed for performance so you might not know, they often have compromised daily functions such as immunity. A lot of things can suddenly happen to an athlete and they can be cleared up if the athlete is immediately put to rest but they can quickly expand into horrible problems if the athlete is made to fight and perform through it.

I've already stated once before that the main reason that I don't think they were conserving energy is that you don't need 3 days to recover from a 200m swim. You have no rebuttal to that and you're just trying to work around it basically trying to save your hypothesis rather than come up with an unbiased view based on the facts.

People can have different opinions, and I don't need to prove anything here. From what I see from previous Olympics and world championships, they have this trend of conserving energy for the relay events, by giving up on certain events. They do regard relay events as more important as winning team events shows how strong a country is in that event.

I'm asking you if you heard it from the Chinese team or if you made it up so I can judge the value of your opinion.

That can be true if they have scheduling conflicts or if someone has to swim massive long distance. Sun Yang's 1,500m competition really takes a lot out of him so if he has to give up a 400m race a day after, it makes sense. Other swimmers have had to drop races for other races that were happening within an hour of each other. But if you heard this and instantly assumed that every time a swimmer drops a race or doesn't do well in one, that it's because s/he is conserving energy, you're just applying the wrong logic to the wrong situations. You can continue to do so and hold it as your opinion, though, but I find that strange and the equivalent of trapping oneself and being unable to descend a ladder, as the old Chinese saying goes.

Yeah, well, that's also conjecture because how strong a country is is demonstrated the most in the medal tables. Maybe they can play a little here and pick and choose which gold medals they like best but come the Olympics, they'll get scalped by their bosses if they said they sacrificed 2-3 gold medals for a team gold medal and that caused China's overall count to be a little lower than the US instead of a little higher.

They do regard relay events as more important as winning team events. This also happened in athletics. If I remember correctly Xie Zhenye gave up his 200m sprint, just for conserving energy for the 100m relay event, which China had a chance to perform better.

Now that makes sense. Xie wasn't likely to medal in the individual 200m. The heats for the 4x100m relay were on the same day as the 200m finals (8/4/2021). So by giving that up, he could perform in the heats to get China into the finals for the 4x100m where we eventually won bronze.

M'kay so tomorrow we have 3 chances to get that 24th gold medal and here they are, all times in US Eastern time:

1st chance, 11:09am Women's 50m Breaststroke
Tang Qianting will swim against Ruta Meilutyte and Bendetta Pilato. Tang's semifinal swim at this meet made her the 7th fastest woman at this event ever. Unfortunately, Meilutyte is the fastest and Pilato is the second fastest. Tang came in second in the finals but will need to be much faster to beat Meilutyte's qualifying time, which is unlikely to be the fastest she can do. So, I don't think the chances of gold are high.

2nd chance, 11:16am Men's 1,500m Freestyle
Fei Liwei came in 7 out of 8 in the semis so... he's got his work cut out for him. I don't think his chances are very good either unless he was affected by something in the semis cus if he could go faster, he should want a higher place than 7th just for more certainty of making it into the finals. So, I'm not banking on him.

3rd chance 12:55pm Women's 4x100m Medley Relay
The ladies came in 5 out of 8. When China wins relays, we usually come in number 1 so I don't think they were just messing around saving the best for last. However, this event has a lot more instability than the others. If I were to bet, I'd say this is our best shot at the final gold but I'm not terribly optimistic either.

It was a disappointment that our men's team did not advance to the finals in the 4x100m medley and if I had to guess a yay or nay on whether we'll get our 24th gold, I'd have to guess nay right now.

Ning Zetao and Sun yang should be part of the team?
