Re: ASEAN military news

Yes, we are a small country with at strong military. We do not threaten anyone BUT we are prepared to defend our nation and citizens from any adversary who may try to "bully" us. We learn from recent happenings to other countries, and our PM Lee H L has recently commented about Ukraine/Crimea dilemma. We have friends & allies in the region. It's common knowledge that we participate in mutually beneficial & friendly military exercises: the 5-Power FPDA (Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, NZ, UK), the US, India and others. Singaporeans can feel relatively safe as we have committed National Servicemen. Our businesses, financial institutions & foreign investors can carry out their activities in a safe environment. We always pray for PEACE in our region, and hope that the 21st Century will bring progress and benefits to Asia and the world at large.

Not that I agreed with what PM Lee H L had said, but I will not choose to discuss that in this forum. And yes, we do have good military hardware and equipment, one of the best in the Southeast Asia region I must say, but there are a couple of incidents recently that truly dashed my believes that we are safe in this small island country.

1) The recent riot in Little India and the slow response our home affair team actually reacted (its all over the news).
2) The security breaches in our check points (not once... but twice.) - imagine if those two are actual terrorists with working car bomb and reaches our CBD... or Orchard Road or even some ministries, and set off the bomb... the entire Singapore economic will collapse as foreign investors will fled the country, feeling it was no longer safe in this nation.
3) A couple of years ago, some fellas holding a wrong passport (I think it is those of his son), managed to get out of Singapore with that passport from our airport and was stopped in Vietnam. (that was suppose to be a wakeup call for us that all of our high tech equipment could actually be detered if we do not have the will and discipline in our people...)

Thus I truly hope and pray that we could step up our training, response time, reaction and security.

Re: ASEAN military news

I can totally understand Singapore's predicament and their obsessive focus on defence. They have an unfortunate position of living in an extremely small land mass. Even smaller than Israel. Huge land mass offers a natural protection and gives tactical options as well as giving defenders the time to plan any sort of strategy. Singapore simply does not have that luxury.

In the case of Singapore, from the shore to the seat of power and the capital is literally just minutes!! If Singapore fails to prevent landings by opfor the country is basically lost. Luckily for them they are surrounded by water which is why they need a very strong navy except to the north which is Malaysia but luckily for them Malaysia is a relatively friendly neighbor. Because of limited land area and a very high population density, civilian casualties will be extremely high in the advent of a major attack or bombardment of any kind.. Either from actual war, terrorist activity or sophisticated criminal actions.

Rhino this is a military forum and comments on internal security is not relevant in this thread. Much better for you to write to the Singapore press like several of our citizens & others have done - a more suitable platform to be heard constructively by the relevant government ministries; unless of course you have some other agenda.

My friend. I am in this forum long enough to know that this is a military forum. My previous reply is targeted to what you have mentioned that we should feel safe, but I tell you we are not actually safe, because there are so many security lapse occurring recently in our country... Internal Security is also part of our overall national defenses, not just the military. And might I inform you that our military is also part and parcel of our internal security? So how to you differentiate those?

Plus what makes you automatically think that I have other agendas? All I am saying is that we (in Singapore) are not exactly safe, even with the investment of all those high tech military systems, and I do hope that we (in Singapore) could step up in our preparation of our defenses (internally).

Actually I don't think Singapore even had a capital. We are one big island city... and I truly think that our main defense is offensive. We cannot be on the defense because of the small size of the country, and true, although Singapore is surrounded by water, but unlike England, Singapore is so small, it would be easy for opponents to strike at any area or even form a blockage around Singapore which will cause the entire country to collapse in no time because Singapore is not self reliance.

Thus the main reason for the strong military is to be able for the country to strike at their potential enemy (pre-emptive strike if you will) and end the battle within two weeks or lesser, and force talk onto the table, or hoping that foreign help will come. That is also one reason I mentioned that our internal security also needed to be stepped up, at least to form the last line of defense to hold the country as much as possible while waiting for help or victory from our own military forces in the enemy's land.

Add to that that Singapore is fairly active as a global military. Troops have been stationed in assistants to operations all over the world.
