Re: ASEAN military news

This is a very good thread, we have South East Asia's news circular now.

It is really unfortunate that the "arms race" in this region is escalating because of growing belligerancy shown by some countries. Let's hope common sense & common good would prevail, otherwise the Asia-Pacific will not be an area of continued economic growth but the next area of serious conflicts and even war.

We all have good wishes advill, but I remember somewhere inline with the saying:"When there is blood on the street, there is booming of business" - Arms dealer didn't exactly the kind of people wishes the ease of tensions and the understanding between states - It is the job for the politicians who sign the checks, not the service provider who promise performance.

Russia Sells Second Batch of Gepard-Class Frigates to Vietnam
Posted on Dec 8th, 2011

Vietnam tied a contract with Rosoboronexport for delivery of an additional 2-ship batch of Project Gepard 3.9 frigates, reports Interfax referring to Sergei Rudenko, deputy director for foreign economic affairs of JSC Zelenodolsk Shipyard. According to him, in contrast to the first two Vietnamese frigates armed with missile systems, the second pair will be “antisubmarine-oriented”.

Vietnam purchased first two Project Gepard 3.9 frigates in 2006; the last one was delivered in March 2011. In Vietnamese Navy, the ships obtained names of Dinh Tien Hoang and Ly Thai To. Displacement of such frigate is 2,100 tons. She is armed with antiship missile system, one 76.2-mm and two 30-mm gun mounts. Gepard-class frigate is equipped with heliport for Ka-28 or Ka-31 helicopters.

But that also means Malaysia would risk the price of not staying too far from US policies (that's extremely complicated for a Muslim nation, secular or not), or facing supplies being curtailed or cut altogether...

I agree on your points, but so far Malaysia and USA are on good terms, as alwasys been in the past. And most important Malaysia is unlikely to go into any war with any US-friendly countries in the neighborhood.

However, there was a complaint after an initial training firing exercise by Malaysian airforce after taking delivery of the aircrafts, they found the F-18D could not properly track marine target due to down-graded software. The problem was later solved by manufacturer. This was about 20 years ago.

Indeed, thanks to a change of leadership that weighted more on realist than the older days.

After warships, Aquino now wants to acquire US warplanes

MANILA, Philippines—President Benigno Aquino will ask US President Barrack Obama for fighter jets when they meet, probably sometime next April.

Aquino, a member of the Philippine Air Force reserve, made this disclosure in a speech to PAF personnel at the opening ceremonies of the PAF Invitational Shootfest and firing range blessing at the Villamor Airbase on Saturday.

“We went to Bali, Indonesia, recently and when we’re leaving for the Philippines, we saw on their airport three F-16s parked and they would be given two squadrons more by our American friends,” Aquino said in an impromptu speech.

“I said, this looks rather equitable. Two squadrons for them, one ship for us,” he added in jest.

Aquino said he would remind Obama of the strategic partnership between the Philippines and the US.

SAF holds massive war games in US
AsiaOne
Saturday, Dec 10, 2011

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has successfully conducted an integrated live-firing during Exercise Forging Sabre 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. The exercise was witnessed by Chief of Air Force, Major-General (MG) Ng Chee Meng and other senior SAF officers.

Exercise Forging Sabre 2011 is the third exercise in the Forging Sabre series. It involved over 450 airmen and soldiers, including commando ground surveillance troops. Military aircraft and advanced strike munitions were also deployed.

The exercise provided an excellent opportunity for the SAF to validate its integrated strike capabilities in a realistic and challenging environment, said MG Ng, who noted that the exercise was a "very complex operation".

This is merely to take the advantage of the vast training ground US provides, for Singapore has next to no room for defense in depth.

And this is what everyone knows but nobody would say it out loud officially: adopting the doctrine not unlike the Israeli (back in highschool I once did posed such question during a Q&A session, and I clearly remember that I got the PR officer rather stumped right there), Singapore planned its conventional warfare scenario against Indonesia and Malaysia. While Indonesia is a simpler foe to deal with - inferior navy and airforce that already stretched to protect its vast holdings, Malaysia is a major issue because Singapore is well within artillery striking reach across the Strait of Johor, thus when the crap hits the fan Singapore will hit first, create the necessary depth in defense at Johor, hold out at least a week till US effectively intervene.

Ultimately, Singapore's defense is to make the invaders pay heavily for their risk taking, while not getting their money and blood worth - what makes Singapore valuable are the high-tech industries facilities and the major oil refineries (one of the very few in the world with capability to process Venezuela crude oil), and those most will probably be damaged/lost/render invalid during fighting.

That hold true with the kind of politicians ran those countries over the years, lesser so in these days but still, there's ongoing arms race in the region and Singapore so far managed to stay ahead with the best toys and well-trained regulars in the region; but the future would lean more towards counter-terrorism, as both Malaysia and Indonesia have active AQ cells.

Re: ASEAN military news

The research by "paint gun" on the Philippines & the Singapore Air Forces appears reliable. Although MwRYum had made a few factual comments, regretfully most of his other comments regarding Singapore's warfare scenarios etc. with its neighbours are outdated (as quoted from his high school days). Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore are members of ASEAN with good political cooperation among themselves and with the 7 other ASEAN countries. Agreed, there bound to be occassional hicups among neighbouring countries same as with China & India, US & Mexico etc. etc. It should be noted that there is close cooperation among the Police Forces of Indonesia, Malaysia & Singapore in anti-terrorist operations; and ships of their 3 Navies are deployed on on anti-piracy patrols in the Singapore Straits and Straits of Malacca. Both Malaysia and Singapore are also members of the Five Power Defence Arrangement (FPDA established in 1971) together with Australia, NZ and UK. Their FPDA military forces have held regular exercises. Singapore has good relations with all friendly countries including China, US the EU, and like all sensible & pragmatic countries, it has a fairly strong Military Force, majority of whom are National Servicemen. BTW, if a country has surplus cash it can purchase or develop the latest weaponry like China, Japan and S Korea are doing; and if some country like the US wants to "give" or sell on special terms to the Philippines, or like China to the Pakistan Military/Navy, it's unrealistic to expect the receipient countries not to accept such military assistance. As for the Arms Race in Asia, the debate will continue as who is responsible - this would depend on one's analysis and political alignment & FYI I am an independent commentator & the comments I wrote are mine & not those of the SAF. Merry Christmas and A Happy & Peaceful New Year to all.
