Shenyang FC-31 / J-31 Fighter Demonstrator

Unfortunately, I sense some of the usual bias against SAC in some of the posts here. Claims are that this SAC J-XX will meet more of the basic 4S requirements than F35, T50.
Such a plane will have a big role in PLAAF.

Most Chinese aviation fans don't like Shenyang. They won most of their contract thru powerful connection. While CAC get the contract mostly because it delivers and meet expectation. WS-10 indigenous delay is also because of Shenyang. J-10B received WS-10 engine that late might be also do with rivalry of CAC and Shenyang.

And according to the same source, SAC's fighter is near complete in 112th factory now, and it is likely to seeing the light by the end of this year.

Is there a chance - esp. in mind of AVIC's desperate need for better publicity - that this type will be "unveiled" similar to the J-20 ??? ... Or will it remain a more closely regarded secret, esp. since SAC is not as public open as CAC is !?

Well let's look at the big picture. Here are the upcoming fighters:

JF-17B-WS-13 engine, improved electronics, frontal stealth
---Very possible since it could be a very strong export product.

J-10B/S
---We know this fighter is being developed, it makes sense to improve the J-10 platform.

J-2X-Rumored single engine stealth fighter. Possible since it would be a long term replacement for the J-10.

J-15
---In development, derived from the J-11B. Fills near term need for a carrier fighter.

J-20-Stealth air superiority fighter.
---China's F-22 equivalent.

That's a lot of planes to be developing simultaneously, but we also have these.....

J-16-J-11BS/Su-30 derived fighter bomber.

JH-7B-Another fighter bomber....

J-17-Stealthy Flanker....possibly similar to the Su-35?

J-18-Next generation naval fighter

J-19-5th generation SAC multirole fighter.

This is far too many new fighters. There isn't enough money or enough slots to fill in China's air force.

I still don't understand why they would develop a JH-7B and J-16 simultaneously. The J-16 would be far superior and would be quick and easy to develop since it is just a modified J-11B.

But then there is talk of the J-17, J-18, and J-19....

I am going to suggest that these may be the same fighters. If you remember huitongs post about the J-15 before he learned that it was to be just another flanker variant....he thought that it was a semi stealth design based on SAC's failed design bid against the J-20.

But now 70092 is suggesting that the J-19 is also derived from this failed design. I am thinking that maybe, after SAC lost the bid against the J-20, they continued the project on their own but retooled it for multiple roles. Perhaps their fighter will be carrier-ready as well? Otherwise it is a complete overlap over the J-20 and makes no sense.

I have my doubts about that list too. So many different procurements would be costly and redundant. However, one possibility could be that these are all designs that are meant to be held in reserve for later requests and competitions, especially since the PLAAF hasn't yet put out any requests for a new fighter.

i think he is a pretty reliable ITK... Yes, he does have a strong dislike fos SAC judging from his previous posts. To his credit, he did predict the j-20 revealing iirc, although he got the shape wrong. Good news is he said it will be this yr so we wont wait long.

What shape did he predict? Is he the one that pointed at the triangular one? Because honestly that wasn't too far off.

IF they're privately funded the SAC and XAC are probably hoping for PLAAF interest. I'd think PLAAF are already commited with J-20 for their future AirDom fighter but there is a potential spot for a future striker.

It's pretty good if so. Keeps the two companies busy and fresh while providing PLAAF with open options. Also PLANAF could be interested in SAC's plane for their future carrier fighter. I really wish we knew how many of the projects we see have PLAAF backing and how many are "private".

Anyway, I can not wait for the reaction of foreign press and "analysts" when this SAC plane is "revealed". The sheer fact it will be stealth should probably make them soil themselves, and as it sounds like it will come out just a year after J-20... well

would be interesting to say the least. Cant wait.

A good deal of those are probably being done privately, hoping for government orders.

J-17/J-19 could be the same aircraft, the future carrier fighter is probably only in the early stages of development and is possibly based on SAC's 5th gen plane.
J-2X is probably also in early stages of development, the existence of J-16/strike J-11BS is still pretty shaky because it too can be mixed with J-19.
JF-17B has supposedly flown (huitong) and we cannot immediately assume J-10BS is being developed at all.

Out of all the fighters you listed (apart from J-15), the only one we can expect to fly and most of us accept as being "real" is SAC's 5th gen multi role "J-19" and possibly JH-7B, JF-17B. The rest we can write off as paper planes at the moment and I wouldn't be surprised if a few of them turns out to be nonexistent in the next few years.
Just like the twin engined J-10 was all big news a few years ago.

Let's just sit back and wait, enjoy the show :)

Even if these are early PAK-FA (T-50) "might-look-like" from Paralay and co. they might represent something realistic ..
