As far as the fighter is concerned, I’d like to think that they’re taking their time perfecting the development of the J-31/35 in order to achieve their first fighter to initiate production with an indigenous engine. That would signal China’s arrival in the biggest of the big leagues.
Although, it seems that J-16 might have already achieved this, albeit as a 4th gen platform, launching a 5th gen with a mature engine would be a major accomplishment.

Optimistically 2027-2028 is more realistic. Depends on whether prototype flies this year.
if the aircraft is a modified version of fc-31, then perhaps the project could go a little faster. j-16 is rumored to have conducted maiden flight in 2013 and entered service in 2016 because the airframe was the same as previous models. if j-35 (or whatever its called) is in the same boat then it might shave a year or two off the testing period.

correct myself up there, J-16 maiden flight was 2011.
