WOW!

That's pretty big news.

well none of the other news papers are reporting the same.

besides these guys are citing unnamed sources.

keeping my fingers crossed

retd. Squardon leader Vijender K. Thakur (SPECAT Jaguar, HF24 Marut),
seems to think the Tribune guys heard it all wrong,

he says the IAF is going to buy 3 squardons of PAK FA to get familarised with it ,just like the IAF bought SU30 K's and MK's in the late 1990's.
whie the the research for the FGFA will continue , the MKI started arriving only in 2004.

the PAK FA 's will be sent back to Russia like the SU 30 K's and MK's
and FGFA 's will replace them.

and actually in 1996 the IAF just intended to get just about 3 squardons of SU30's .
now they will 300 Flankers in service.:)

That's how I read it as well.

If anything, this may be seen as an increase in the Indian PAKFA commitment.

Rather than wait who knows how long for their custom FGFA, the IAF seem to be saying they are happy to take 65 jets in it's current configuration, so they get planes to pilots as soon as possible.

At the same time, they are continuing to fund the development of the FGFA version, which they would also be committed to buying once that is ready.

The article does not mention what will happen to the 65 PAKFAs after the FGFA comes online, maybe they will be returned to Russia to be modified for Russian service, or maybe they will just be upgraded and remain in IAF service.

Either way, this is going to cost them a lot of extra coin to get operational 5th gens in their order of battle a few years earlier than if they just waited for the FGFA to be ready.

I suspect the J20 would be a major factor in this decision, as I cannot imagine the IAF high command is going to be happy at the prospect of seeing (or more likely, not seeing but only knowing of) operational J20s flying about in China, while the best they have are still the MKIs.

Almost certainly the case, for those who may be interested, in the third picture down, the rear doors of the bomb-bay aren't fit nearly as well as the front bomb-bay, confirmed by the fifth picture? In the third picture on the aft end of the doors, they are hanging approx. 1/2 in to 1 inch lower as illustrated by the small triangle where the doors are not flush with the aft fuse skin, and hang slightly below the leading edge of the tail-sting.

sometimes these doors have latches to pull them together???, its always a pain to get gear doors to pull up flush and snug up, you will have to increase the magnification to see the slight anomaly? on a production fifth gen these will be cleaned up, at best they are slightly "draggy", at worst they may very slightly compromise some of the structural integrity, and create a small radar spike in return?
