this week we had the discussion here about space/weaponry on Russian/Western warships; in the end

... and I add right now two Buyan-Ms are coming back from five-weeks deployment off Syria, about 1200 nm away:

Syria has become Russian quagmire, but it's a different matter (here I only commented on the performance of Project 21631 from a technical perspective)

reported that Russia has deployed an advanced anti-missile system to Syria for the first time.

Components of the S-300V4 Gladiator anti-missile and anti-aircraft system, which has a range of roughly 150 miles, arrived over the weekend “on the docks” of a Russian naval base along Syria’s Mediterranean coastal city of Tartus, two US officials said.

It is the first time Russia has deployed the S-300V4 system outside its borders, according to one Western official citing a recent intelligence assessment. The missiles and associated components are still in their crates and are not yet operational, according to the officials.

The U.S. intelligence community has been observing the shipment of the S-300V4 inside Russia in recent weeks, according to one official.

The Buyan class have proved to be very effective vessels for the Russians.

They have taken what amounts to a relatively small corvette, and made it a very valuable instrument to strike enemies at extreme distance with precision SLCMs from a distance that the particular enemy can do absolutely nothing about.

reminded about the conjecture I've read, which is that this kinda surface version of "Fort" (the posts by FORBIN right above) Russians recently brought to Syria to be able to protect Mr. Assad from an attack by the US Navy Tomahawks (if I'm not mistaken, such an attack was imminent three years ago, Obama just didn't call it then) ... it's scary, I of course don't mean to discuss any scenario any further
