I’ve got a question related to the ammunition used by this rifle. Why does it seem like Chinese ammo as used by the PLA produces a ton of smoke? I don’t believe NATO rounds produce anywhere near the amount you always see in live fire exercises. Do they use a different powder formulation or something?

Likely firing older ammo like DBP 95/87, which are the most numerous 5.8mm in storage. In that case, you need at least a 460mm barrel like that of QBZ-95 for enough powder to be burnt and chamber pressure to generate the designed muzzle velocity of 930-950 mps. If you fire those older ammo from QBZ-191, you will like have issues like excessive muzzle flesh and projectile underperformance. But if you fire newer ammo like DBP 10/191, those new cartridges likely contain faster burning propellant. You could think of it as the difference between the original NATO M855 and the newer M855A1.

I don't think the normal ammunition produces that much smoke. The blanks they use do though.
