Actually EMRG is the perfect CIWS to guard against those missile It is fast , efficient, plenty of munition whereas missile like HJ 10, or HHQ9 is limited in number and can be ovewhelm by opponent

This is supposedly Ma Weiming's game plan for China's all-electric ship.

Large calibre railgun for long range attack.
Small calibre railgun for medium range missile/aircraft defense.
High energy laser for point defense against missiles/drones.

Exactly. The test will focus on its limit, largest projectile, fastest speed, highest rate of fire etc. But it does not mean it can't be used in other situations. In fact, an EM gun (railgun, coil etc) can be used in different configurations from small slow to small fast to large slow. It is like a full programmable gun plus full programmable ammo in the same barrel.

The other main issue is people are fooled into believing the EM gun must be bulky. Since the power source and the barrel can now be separated, the power source can be shared among multiple barrels. And setting up additional barrels will be easier/lighter etc over time. This also means you can now focus on power source/charging tech because that would increase your navy's capability without building brand new ships and creating new barrels.

Wouldn't it be fun to see China surprise the world again with a workable shipborned laser anti-missile system? Not the first, but workable. China watching needs a dose of faith and not ~INT sources.

Ma Weiming's plan is to do away with missiles and VLS?? Does he plan to design a rail gun that can fire accurately at targets 1,000km away?

The plan is to have the rail gun firing missiles IIRC.
Oh, right, the magnetically-launched missile with super range! Yes, yes,

I guess we should just wait for more information. We really don't know anything about the Chinese project at this time. I am sure more will begin to become available if they are testing this project where it is easily visible in the open.
Don't think so.they just let you see what not so important in their mind.If they are serioursly don't want you to know anything, then you will not know anything.

There is a test facility, a lake nearby. It will be too much work to drive all the way to sea, and back (if they need adjustments).

The railgun itself was tested in the desert of Inner Mongolia. Plenty of reports in the past, we just all ignored it. In the latest pic the gun looks like a final product with all the details.
I doubted Wuhan is the best place to test the weapon. The nearby ranges are simply not vast enough to test the full range of the railgun unless the PLAN only plans to test the projectiles at an extremely lofted trajectory.

I think the most useful piece of new information we can get right now is how powerful this gun is. That alone will tell us what kinds of roles it’s intended for. Short of muzzle energy, getting information on the mass or caliber of the projectiles it fires would go a long way to answering that question.
