This thread is for the single Type 051B vessel (167) and the two Type 051C vessels (115 and 116). The Type 051 Luda class has its own thread.

Here is a picture of the 115 051C. First time we get to see the back of it. They built this boat very quickly. Congrats to the Chinese.
Thank you cowlan for the picture.

Well Im not sure who took the picture since the forum I got it from cannot be viewed in China. Either way I hope we get a clearer image of it. Can someone with a better eye tell me if that FAC is the 2111?

Yeah it's 2211, 2208 is still in Shanghai... the FAC base is pretty near Dalian

Being in commission does not necessarily mean that it is operational. Two years ago, almost to the date, 168, 169, 170, and 525 were all present at the Zhoushan navy base, with all their pennants flying. As I recall the four ships were rushed into commission simply because the President was on an inspection tour at the fleet headquarters. More than a year elapsed before the 168 demonstrated its operational capacity in the joint fleet exercise with Russia.

What? just coz the 52b didnt take part in an excercise doesnt mean its not operational. There are probably dozens of small fleet manuvers and excercies it took part in before peace 05. You dont put a brand new, unproven ship into a high level excercise unless you know it will perform well.

it's good news for the PLAN that those ships are finally out. now the next big sensation would be to see the 54A's to some out....hehe.

And after that it should be time for the PLAN to finally finalize its designs and systems for the 052c DDG's by bringing out 052D's in mass numbers (I hope). It is only by then that you can say that the PLAN posseses a credible fleet airdefence....in other words, the coming years could turn out to be extremely interesting concerning the build up of the PLAN :D

Years may pass before the next wave of new ship construction. Here is what Kanwa Defense Review has to say about the follow up ships to the 052B/C and 051C classes--

CHINESE MILITARY INDUSTRY IN “FOREVER TRANSITION”

An authoritative technical source disclosed that the current plan is that the batch of 051C DDG and 052C DDG under construction at Dalian Shipyard involves two vessels respectively, and there is no plan to build more in the immediate future. “They are all experimental vessels of a transitional period, and the next peak of battleship building will only come after PLA Navy gets familiar with them. For this purpose, China is now working on PLA Navy system development plan after 2010,” the source said.

It's kanwa, a lot of their assessments haven't turned out to be correct. Although the forever transition does have some validity in it. As people have said, with 052D coming out, it could be the one that PLAN finally puts in a large order for. Also, one wonders whether or not 054A will be the mass produced version in this series.

I would go for the transition route. But this is not because the present designs are unsatisfactory, it is because there is always room for improvement, and you should always take the chance to exploit new experience and build even better designs.

The basic design flaw of current AEGIS, ships with the RIF-M like the 051C here, and 052C here comes from the fact that the huge arrays are situated either in the superstructure, or in a place right about that level. That limits the height where you can put the antenna, and that limits the ability of the ship to guide or direct missiles against targets coming up beyond the radar horizon.

The next generation of radars and air defense ships should have the arrays and directors located in the mast, as high as possible, higher than the superstructure, so they could peer down the horizon more. The current arrays on the 052C are big and bulky, and the next generation of arrays may be more efficient.
