Advanced they maybe, the Collins class offer no real capability right now, as only one of them is operational at the moment due to all the teething technical problems, and Australia only has enough submariners to man three of them.

The technical problems with the Collins class were worked out years ago, but that rap seems to have no end. They are fine submarines, as good as a diesel boat gets today. You are correct that the RAN is not able to crew all six subs consistently. Staffing is the main reason the RAN didn't buy Burkes when these were offered to them. The Spanish F-100's need much smaller crews. I am mystified how Australia plans to man up twelve subs, the current plan when the Collins are replaced in the next decade.

as I know these subs normaly don't operate in the Indian Ocean.

Don't to forget Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia;
Malaysia used the french sub "Quessant" (Agosta-70-class) for training (was returned to europa) and now operate 2 french "Scorpene" subs.
Singapore as I know operate 4 swedish A12 class subs, additional in the future they will have two swedsh Vastergotland-class boats.
Indonesia at least have two german 209/1300 class subs. They are in negotiatons for russian (Kilo) or south-korean (CHANG BOGO) subs.

Israel keeps at least one Dolphin in the Indian Ocean routinely. They recently moved another into the IO through the Suez Canal, along with some other surface craft. Israel does it's cruise missile testing off Sri Lanka, btw.

I am serious, only HMAS Farncomb is operational at the moment, HMAS Collins is out of active service, HMAS Waller is undergoing urgent battery repair, while HMAS Sheehan, Rankin and Dechaineux are undergoing maintenance.

I would assume that the economic crisis will make submarine service look a lot more appealling in the coming years.

Israel does not operate one or even two Dolphin's regularly in the Indian Ocean. IDF navy made a couple of cruises for weapon testing purposes possibly in cooperation with the Indian navy but this does not constitute a routine presence.

IDF does publicize this kind of maneuvers mainly for intimidating Iran. Possibly Israel also wants to highlight Egypt's military assistance (passage through the Suez canal) for creating an impression of interest alignment with ´moderate´ Arab states. Nevertheless Riyadh appears to be not really enthused about Israel's steadily increasing naval presence in the Red Sea/Indian Ocean. So just sit and wait until also Israel's navy will ostensibly start hunting pirates at the Bab al Mandeb...

Any more news about the Yuans? It seems they stopped building any new ones after the most recent launch.

I think there is a new picture of a new su posted on the CDF once in a while, suggesting an ongoing program that produces a few subs each year.

The problem with ALL articles about the Indian Navy nuclear submarine is that there are no pictures of it at all.

And you would think that they would be anxious to show it off.

Until I see a picture of it, I have to wonder whether they are as far along as they say they are...or whether there is something seriously wrong with it...or if it is even near completion.

Now...back on topic. How many (delete Type-022s) Yuans are there in service now? Anyone know?

Oops...as plawolf noted...this is indeed the Sub thread. I do not know why, but it was early morning and somehow I thought I was on the FAC thread. My bad.
