The technical problems with the Collins class were worked out years ago, but that rap seems to have no end. They are fine submarines, as good as a diesel boat gets today. You are correct that the RAN is not able to crew all six subs consistently. Staffing is the main reason the RAN didn't buy Burkes when these were offered to them. The Spanish F-100's need much smaller crews. I am mystified how Australia plans to man up twelve subs, the current plan when the Collins are replaced in the next decade.Advanced they maybe, the Collins class offer no real capability right now, as only one of them is operational at the moment due to all the teething technical problems, and Australia only has enough submariners to man three of them.
