PLAN SCS Bases/Islands/Vessels (Not a Strategy Page)

The PRC is using its significant reclamation capabilities to create a complete base, which I believe will include the airfield, a harbor and docking facilities, and probably all of the infrastructure necessary to have a strong base with radar and defenses in the South China Sea where none existed before.

They are going about this very methodically and in a way that simply has them enhancing their own possessions there.

As I have said before, unless someone embarks on an equally agressive reclamation effort, the PRC will ultimately be in an almost unassailable position in the South China Sea in terms of its ability to control its economic interests there.

No one EXCEPT CHINA has the ability to do this in the world 1!!

It's interesting to see how China is achieving this remarkable land reclamation project to establish its presence in the region and to protect its interests.

Considering that America has a "base of operations" (Diego Garcia) which it has been using for over a decade, if not, decades. I have a question for Jeff and other members who are experienced enough. To shed some light on why the Americans not do something similar to what China is achieving.

Is it because they have no formal requirement for such bases. As they have presence in Emirates and Australia?

Or is because Diego Garcia is unchallenged in that part of the indian Ocean?

Or because it is not really a US Territory and would require Britain's consent in order to do so?

One has to admit though, Diego Garcia is quite well placed, smack in the middle of the indian Ocean. From strategic point of view, it's an ideal location for a Navy/Air Force Base. Of course for a country which has a global reach by air and a Blue Water Navy!

Apologies for going off-topic, but I am curious to know what Jeff or other experienced members have to say on this subject.

Maritime observation network

China will set up an offshore observation network including satellite and radar stations to strengthen the country’s maritime power, protect maritime assets and realize the resource potential in its marine areas.

This network will cover coastal waters and high seas. Undersea observation and tsunami warning stations will also be built.

China's State Oceanic Administration called this network “fundamental” to protecting China’s maritime interests. It is to be completed by 2020. No cost was mentioned.

I think you've answered most of your own questions. :)
As to the reclamation, there were some dredging going on in the past though not as much is needed in DG as they are in the case of the SCS atolls since DG is naturally much bigger anyway. They have a pretty decent size airbase there and many flights in and out are actually top secret.

DG belongs to the UK but the US managed to convince them to let us build a naval facility and airfield there.

We are eagerly awaiting photo updates of the bases under construction!

+1. Me too!

Thanks to A.Man for the Yongshu pic.

Does anyone have updated pics of Chigua (Johnson South), Huayang (Cuateron), Dongmen (Hughes), Anda (Eldad), Nanxun (Gaven) or Subi?

Wonder how the "casino" construction at Chigua is progressing. :):):)

Good progress.

There are 6 or 7 dredgers working in the harbor, perhaps to make it deeper to cater for subs.

The area at the bottom next to the garrison is enlarged substantially. Also, there looks to be a small harbor next to it.

I think there is a water reservoir in the middle which would be needed to cater for the population on the island.
