Comparison of Meiji Island with Male, Maldives and Palm Island, Dubai. I believe they are to scale.

Meiji.美济礁.Mischief.2016-04-08a_compare-Male-Palm-Island.jpg

Male, Maldives has an area of about 2 sq km and supports a population of about 100,000.

So, Meiji Island has lots of potential in terms of tourism development and fisheries. It has the critical mass to be a very useful island for China. If China chooses to increase its size, it can do so too!

Wow as someone who's actually been in Male the comparison is quite shocking. The place was big enough to be a small city upon entering it and Mischief reef is approximately as large or larger?

Thank you ahojunk,

interesting because I am yet to see a single source that sites all three in the same document as separate features.

The coordinates I have seen for Hughes, (Mc)Kennan and Chigua are essentially the same.

Yongshu+Second.Thomas+Alicia.Annie+Langhua.Bombay-compare-sizes.jpg

Picture shows the relative sizes of Yongshu (Fiery Cross), Second Thomas, Alicia Annie and Langhua (Bombay) islands/reefs.

Yongshu Island = 108 sq km.
Second Thomas reef = 52 sq km.
Alicia Annie reef = 20 sq km.
Langhua (Bombay) reef (in Paracels) = 70 sq km.

When we mention Yongshu, we tend to focus on the south-west part of the reef which is now about 2.75 sq km in size. However, the entire Yongshu reef is 108 sq km (including the lagoon in the centre).

China's southernmost city is preparing to plant 500,000 trees within the year in a new "greening of the islands" initiative.

Sansha's geography in the South China Sea means the city's forest-building plans face challenges, including transportation of tree seedlings, limited fresh water supplies and extreme weather, such as typhoons, Xinhua reported.

But the tree planting is vital as the forests will provide a good windbreak and prevent shoreline erosion, improving the city's ecology and benefiting residents, officials said.

Coconut and casuarina trees are the plants of choice, as they have a high survival rate in the area's hot, humid, salty and high-radiation conditions.

Last year, about 300,000 trees were planted on islands and reefs, and 90 percent survived, turning the desert islands into green ones.

Sansha also promoted an "Internet plus tree" adoption activity to netizens. For 300 yuan ($46) per year, participants could own a coconut tree on the city's Zhaoshu island, according to media reports.
