PLAN invited to participate in RIMPAC for first the time (2014)

The fact that China is sending a pretty huge Flotilla says it all

If China felt they were being side lined they would down right refuse or send a older FFG that is not the case

CCP is very mature and sensible they know what they are doing they doing everyone is watching they are doing the right thing

And let's remember the invitation came from US to attend RIMPAC they could easily have not asked at all that's the cold shoulder

It's like someone is decent enough to send me invitation and I turn round and refuse that would be childish and immature behaviour

And who says China will not be part of the war games they are taking part means they are taking part

If someone sends invitation it's only good gesture to accept even if it's for desert maybe one day you will hold the main dinner no need to be so greedy and up tight no need for so much pride that will get you no where

I think it's part of a culture thing. Chinese likes to put on the best or similar representation even if they are the supporting character.

Already they know PLAN would not have a part in the sensitive war games, only to be involved in hospital ship exercise, hence sending no. 547 and no. 113 would be a more sensible options. In recent times, PLAN has been conducting many rounds of one FFG plus one DDG exercises around the global waters. Hence this time round it would be best for a similar combo, plus the auxiliary ships.

I reckon that during this period of travelling, all PLAN ships would have conducted much more sea exercises even though some might see them as supporting casts during the RIMPAC. So at the end of the exercise, the PLAN would have gained more experience during the travelling period than at RIMPAC. In another words, this journey would be a fruitful one as well.

Cheers.

Seriously?

They get invited for the first time ever. And they are involved in maritime interdiction missions, and a 1st ever Hosptial ship exercise?

That's not the "cold shoulder" in the least. The cold shoulder would be to not invite them at all...or when inviting them to have them sit in port in Hawaii and observe only, or to go out but stay 20 miles or more out of the way.

Instead, they are going to be a part of a Joint Task Force and conduct realistic exercises with those forces.

I would hope most Chinese would recognize and welcome the opportunity to be a part of the largest and most involved multi-nation naval exercises on earth, and therefore put their best foot forward.

We shall see which combatants they actually send...but I am willing to bet it is not Luda class.

A Type 054 and either 112 or 113 at the least.

A Type 054A and a Type 052B or "C" or Type 051C at the best.

I'll bet money on PLAN ship Qingdao (DDG 113) the being at RIMPAC..

But that's not the case.

Their hospital ship will be involved with a US hospital ship in a first ever exercise at RIMPAC between participants with hospital ships like this. That's a good thing, and actually something special becasue it has not been done before

but that is not all they are doing.

Their combatants are also going to be involved with a task force of several ships conducting a maritime security exercise. That's nothing to sneeze at. And it is more than they thought originally when they discussed purely humanitarian exercises for the PLAN.

I see this as being pretty significant for a first time ever attendant.

Well, it's starting to look like it.

Perhaps the Type 054A FFG, Liuzhou, and the Type 052 DDG, 113, along with the Hospital ship and oiler. But they may yet send a Type 052C as we have discussed in the past.

It's be nice to see the Type 052C...but that is looks less likely now. Still, those four are a very decent representatios of the PLAN, and they will be involved in several exercises. since they mention the dive team specifically, I bet the Maritime Security exercise will involve them in some way.

I guess some people expect the PLAN to come for the 1st time and be involved to the hilt with everything. That's just not going to happen.

Those exercises are from June 26 to August 1 this year (and for those counting, that's five weks, which is a long and involved set of exercises. Twenty-three nations will be involved, bringing a total of forty-seven surface ships, six submarines, more than two hundred aircraft, and over twenty-five thousand personnel to participate. Naval units from Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Columbia, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the People’s Republic of China, Peru, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, the United Kingdom and the United States will be involved.

Some of the nations have very long standing involvement with RIMPAC, but also have ongoing security issues with the PRC. These exercises will involve all of them and to do so in such a way as to foster better relations between all and give them an opportunity to be involved in professional exercises, along with several weeks of social and extra-curricular activities that will allow them to do things in settings where they can not be so "official," and get to know one another better.

All of that plays into this...and someone getting their feelings hurt because they are "not involved enough," on their first visit, is just not going to happen. I expect the PLAN sailors and personnel will all be extremely squared away, professional, and gracious guests who will make a great impression and a lot of friends.
