Qingdao-Jiaonan: 881
Zhoushan-Dinghai: 882, 886
Zhanjiang: 885, 887

As it turns out, PLAN only ordered two 903A, one each from Hudong and Guangzhou. They will be for ESF and SSF, respectively (889, 890?).

888 could get re-used.

I think 888 is strictly for supplying the South China Sea islands (in my view, Zhong Guo Yu Zheng 88 is just a tired joke).

Pictures paint a thousand words. So, once again, in order to pictorially and spec wise further document the thread, here are those five large AOR vessels serving in the PLAN with their specs, pennant numbers, names, and a couple of pictures of each:

I particularly like the pics of them doing UNREP, and particularly of 885 and 887 doing so with the new, modern PLAN vessels. The best of which is the one above with 885 with a Type 071 LPD, a Type 052C DDG, and a Type 054A FFG all at one time in that pic. Says a lot about the developing PLAN capability.

Crazy to think that PLAN has only 5 replenishment tankers 2 of which are really ocean going vessels the Type 903

The two never Type 903A will certainly be a welcome addition

Like tphuang said, I think 881 and 882 have performed blue water excursions, and 885 have been to aden before I believe(?). Either way it is currently the largest AOR the PLAN have so it's definitely an ocean going vessel.

So really all 5 are ocean going, only the two 903s have been to aden the most.

Ah ok great yes I see in the pics now, 885 is doing Type 071, Type 052C and a Type 054A in pics Jeff posted

However 881, 882 is old, slow and also can not refuel a aircrafts carrier, infact I do not think that Type 903 can do it either which is a modification the Type 903A may include according to Warship magazine June issue 2012

885 again is big and slow and suffers probably from the same insufficienties 881 and 882 have, they do not handle live ammunition and can't store weapons and bombs in storage areas like a Type 903 can which is designed as a replenishmnet tanker to meet the requirements of the PLAN in this decade and onward

881 and 882 is the same as the one sold to Pakistan, called PNS Nasr which now is inadequate for the Pakistan Navy which is why now China and Pakistan are in talks to design a new replenishment tanker in the class of the Type 903/A

So if Fuqing Class is not meeting PN requirements ( which was hull 4 (1985) whereas hull 1 and 2 were delivered to PLAN earlier) I doubt it is doing it for PLAN which really leads me to think that still 881 and 882 are out of the question for PLAN long term service

Therefore in light of this information i still have to say that 811, 882, and 885 (ex-Soviet navy as such has inherit design flaws to serve PLAN requirements) are not long term ocean going vessels, thier service in Gulf of Aden was symbolic to again experience but not for a anything more

The future of PLAN replenishment is lies with Qiandaohu-class, btw Jeff nice job with the pics!
