reports of a new air and naval base under construction in the Nanji Islands. Google Earth's latest images from August 2013 don't show anything so it must be a recently-began project. Can anyone find additional information about this?

China’s military is building a large-scale base on islands near the Diaoyu Islands, several Chinese sources said yesterday.

Construction is underway in the Nanji Islands, in Zhejiang Province, about 300km northwest of the Japanese-administered, uninhabited Diaoyus in the East China Sea. Japan calls the Diaoyus the Senkakus.
Sources said several large radar installations had been built at high points on the main Nanji Island.

Several landing strips had been paved – likely for use by aircraft based on warships or patrol vessels – while more landing strips were set to be constructed on an island next to Nanji Island starting from next year.

The new Type 071 LPD, 978, Tanggula Shan (唐古拉山) which is preparing for launch, will apparently be an East Sea Fleet vessel.

The next two, 979, Tai Shan (泰山), which will start building when 978 is launched, and 980, currently not named. will also apparently be East Sea Fleet vessels.

Pretty sure that is an island right off of the mainland Chinese coast, not significantly closer to Diaoyutai/Senkakus than the mainland itself. The military bases closest to Diaoyutai/Senkakus, much closer than Nanji Island, would be ones on Taiwan itself and the Japanese base on Yonaguni Island.

It's about 90km southeast of Wenzhou, searching for nanjizhen on Google Maps will show it. If the base is significant, it will be closer to Diaoyutai/Senkaku compared to the base on Okinawa. Yonaguni will still be closer but it's supposed to be more or a remote station, radar and ~100 troops.

We are going to have three separate threads for the three separate PLAN Fleets and the islands associated with those fleet Areas of Operation. Please relegate your discussions to those appropriate threads for News, Views, Pictures, videos and discussion of the various Fleets overall and their area of Operations for the PLAN.

The three threads are:

PLAN South Sea Fleet & Bases/Islands
PLAN East Sea Fleet & Bases/Islands
PLAN North Sea Fleet & Bases/Islands

These are for the specifics of those fleets and their areas of operations. We will continue in the for specific Vessel Class developments, launching, etc. in the respective threads for those class types.

We simply do not have enough information, bandwidth, or resource to allow for separate threads for each fleet and separate threads for the various island chains in general.
