PK means Penalty Kick, a term drawn from the soccer game.

I'm so surprised that more than half dozen members have tried and answered your question, incorrectly. Looks like most members here are military nerds. LOL.

Sheer popularity of MMOs in China means PK would virtually mean people or player killer and Chinese MMOs are heavily lenient towards PvP combat. I played Age of Wulin before, and people are going to jump you once you are out of the safe zone. Got PKed many times, and I PK when the opportunity arises. It doesn't matter if the victim is many levels lower than you; you do what it takes to be the top martial artist in all of Ming China. Another game like that would be Perfect World. I am guessing the nerds behind the catapult project would undoubtedly be playing MMOs in their spare time.

People Kill.
Which is why it's easier to understand for everyone by calling it deathmatch...
or 扑街
That's certainly the censorship bypass for those who speak Cantonese.
are you sure? I always thought it was something more friendly... Many Chinese variety shows use "PK" a lot on a very friendly term...
Like I said, it was once a gamer slang that now took to a wider usage and certainly not as edgy as it once was. Today's variety show viewers - and hosts - were/are those very gamers.

Over 15 years ago, a girl in China that I knew at the time asked me what PK meant. I don't play MMOs, but I doubt it was popular or even existed back then in China.

I didn't intend military nerds as insulting. All the SDF members have some military nerds inside us, more or less.
