Guys as Jeff posted eariler..this is an excellent thread.

MIGleader..While it is true the French operate a CV. I do not think they would share or sell certain things to the PLAN. Did you know the French catapults are the same as on a US Carrier? In fact US shipyard personnel have repaired(performed mainatince) on them in the past.
....

Carrier operations though? Yes the PLAN will ahve to learn how to do it safely. The French would be a great help in this area.
two points
1) as I know, the catapult if MINAS GERAIS was brazil design
and China studied there sistership, the Melbourne, which had another light steam-catapult
2) without USA, Russia and the French also Brazil (and some yrs ago Argentinia) operated fix-wing carriers; ofcourse - the russians are the first adress to help China, but also:
there are good relations between Argeninia, Brazil at the one and China at the other hand. Last visit of Lula included a contract about military cooperation. Some former carrier sealords, deckmans and pilots out of southamerica could be interested, to increase his pension as senior-advisor.

The one aft the island is now down, so it has been moved to that position...but otherwise looks to be in the normal position. The one fore of the island is up.

It looks like it is in the up position to me. Look at both pics guys. Look at the aera by the aft(rear) lift(Elevator). Some sort of re-configutrtion seems to be going on there. What do the rest of you think? Anybody know how old these pics are? I've been seeing them on the web for about 3 months.

I don't know why some of you are calling the aircraft elevator a "lift". It's an elevator. On USN CV's they are refered to as "El's". Oh well:eek: to each his own. Wait a minute. I know the Brits call elevators lifts. Maybe that's it.

so the elevators ar in work, which means, there ar engines and power to move them - and this is not a need to be done by an amuesement carrier, the big elevators ar only needed to lift (recurrence) big engines, helos, planes ... ;)

Well, the Argentines and the Brazillians do have some carrier arrested landing and catapault launch experience...but it is limited when compared to the US...or, for that matter, to the French.

While the Brits, the Italians, the Spanish, and the Thais have varying degrees of experience (the Brits with the most) in VTOL and STOL operations, the Russians have the greatest experience in STOAL, which is what I believe the Varyag will represent should it becoime operational.

Well...it could mean that...and after over two years it would be possible.

But it may be more likely at this point that auxillary power, either indirectly on the ship, or completely off the ship, is moving those elevators.

if bit offtopic, but what kind of book(s) have you written?

Well, I wasn't going to link to my own books...but I see the webmaster did just above this response (humble thanks), so I will just say this.

The series is a fictional, techno-thriller novel about a future conflict beween the PRC and her allies and the US and her allies. Purely fiction...sort of like a Clancy novel with an attitude...and more action from the start, sort of like he used to do when he got started.
