How about PLAN ASW capabilities is PLAN cap's equal yet with Japan or SK?

Well, ASW is one of the weak points of PLAN, due to e.g. the lack of any credible maritime patrol aircraft and lack of ASW helicopters. The long shoreline doesn't help either.

Japan has a quite strong ASW, the American submarine campaign took a quite large toll on the Japanese merchant fleet in WWII (they were actually more effective than Doenitz's famous wolfpacks), so Japan has invested quite much in ASW and their own submarines.

For SK I can't say, obviously they have a shorter coastline meaning that the need in numbers is smaller than it is for China. I remember hearing about a quarrel over the US not sharing sonar profiles for NK subs with SK, which then should hamper their ASW capability, but I don't remmeber any details. If anyone can correct me/provide a source on this one it would be nice.

Generally I agree with you. The most effective anti-sub weapon the PLAN has is the Yu-7, which the PLAN was only able to build because it recovered versions of the american mod-46. If that hadn't happened, the PLAN would have no effective anti-sub weapon to speak of today. But having said that, China has aqquired more advanced anti-submarine warfare equipment from Russia, suc as the Ka-28 helicopter. If the theories about what the Chinese Ka-28s are armed with are correct, then China should have aqquired the SV3 depth-charge, PLAB 250-120 bombs, and Russian built homing torpedoes. As China's economy grows and the country becomes richer, we should be seeing more adavanced Russian anti-sub equipment arrivng in China - after all, China has recently made several major purchases of Russian naval hardware already. I think it could use some more advanced shipbourne ASW, since the only shipbourne ASW syastem the PLAN currently posseses is the Yu-7, which is only a very basic form of ASW.

The main problem that needs to be addressed is detection. Can the PLAN detect and track modern SSNs of the US and SSK's of Japan?
If you can't do that first, then all your torpedoes, depth charges, etc are useless.

Chinas probably banking on using its own SSKs to fight SSNs and other SSKs. Thats my reasoning for why PLAN surface ASW is woefully inadequate aside from the ka-28s. Even the yu-7's range is substandard, only 14k. There are russian torpedoes for sale that can go as far as 50+ km. On the other hand, china has been developing some very advnaced wire-guided torpedoes(for ssks) based on russian TEST-71 technology. So thats my explanation.
