Re: PLAN Qualifies 1st six pilotsa for carrier take-off & landing

That seems to be older pilots, not typical young frontline-pilots.

Most likely older aviators with lot of flight hours and lot of experience with Flanker types . My bet is they would be future instructors , not the pilots which would permanently serve with the ship's air wing .

Here's a thought for everyone.

Some day Liaoning will exercise with her sister ship, the Russian Kuznetsov.

I bet we see it one day. Either the Russians will sail Kuznetsov over to the Western Pacific, or Liaoning will go around the world and they will conduct exercises together.

That will be a really neat thing to see.

I would like that to happen too.

They are both born in the same period but flourish at different era!

Such an exercise would surely worry the west and Japan!

Looking at the Admiral Kuznetsov made me realized that she is the only ship in the Russian Navy that has APARS. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

No. It really doesnt have APARS. What we see on kuznetzov are only concrete slabs to fool NATO watchers. The original radar system, mars-passat, ended up a failure, and the soviets put slabs in its place. Thats why the sister ship (varyag) was built without APARS and instead with 2 mast radars.

Yes, Pragmatic Analysts should NEVER underestimate the potentials of China's Navy. BTW, It's not only military/naval power, there are other important considerations including geo-politics, economics and importantly internal domestic situations. Anything could happen, and 10-20 years time are really very long term projections. In the meantime the major powers will continue to play "chess" and try to outwit the opponents if possible. I believe "Military Alliances" are in the making for the Asia-pacific Region to ensure peace and stability.

Such attitude is exactly what China craves the outsiders to have - being underestimated, so they can keep closing the gap while the others being complacent of their lead. A bit of show now and then to prove they're moving into the major league, but wanting everyone keep believing the PLAN is nothing more than bottom-feeder even in 30 years time.

Though it's not like China strive for the same standing as the US - to grow this big you need some major global wars to give cause for expansion.

Right now, China is working on getting enough certified carrier-borne pilots, enough officers and crew manpower pool for carrier ops, building up the software while the hardware still catching up in quantity and quality - J-15 still yet to reach serial production phase, and even in current prototype phase it has yet seen with full payload; first locally built carrier has yet to have its first steel plate cut.

All in all, PLAN carrier group is still 2 decades away from fruition. But nonetheless they're working towards that, so don't write China off so soon. Though for China, they'd certainly hope for something else catch the US attention, best something like what Iraq was, all attention was on the Middle East for 10 years and when the US look up again, they saw a whole different China.

The island structure of the Liaoning seems to be smaller than that of the Admiral Kuznetsov. The Varyag was laid down the day that the Admiral Kuznetsov (then Tbilisi) was launched in december 1985. The second hull of this class incorporates the lessons from building the first hull. The Liaoning is said to be slightly larger than the Admiral Kuznetsov. The maximum load of the Admiral Kuznetsov is 61390 tons and that of the Liaoning is 67500 tons.
