I don't know why there's this questioning over the progress of the Liaoning. I've seen this lately in comments to articles. Was there some story of how China has failed in aircraft carriers by how long it's taking? Remember when critics were trying to discourage China from even having carriers because "it takes decades to master?" Now it's "why is it taking so long?"

China will have better aircraft carriers than India, Japan: Kanwa

If China can successfully carry out its Type 001A aircraft carrier program, the People's Liberation Army Navy will eventually have better carriers than its Indian and Japanese counterparts, according to Kanwa Defense Review, a Chinese-language military magazine based in Canada.

After comparing the capabilities of the Liaoning, China's first aircraft carrier, and its Indian counterpart the INS Vikramaditya, Kanwa concluded that the PLA Navy does not have any advantage in real combat. While Chinese experts said that the PLA Navy's Type 052D guided-missile destroyers can offer the Liaoning better better air defense capability than Indian destroyers can offer the Vikramaditya. However, India has already acquired advanced air defense missile from Israel for its destroyers, the article said.

While the Chinese experts believe that China's J-15 carrier-based fighter is better than India's Russian-built MiG-29, Kanwa said the Chinese fighter is still under development. The MiG-29 has been used in various aerial operations, and China admits that the J-15 will not be fully ready before 2020. Moreover, it remains unclear whether China is capable to operate the J-31, its second stealth fighter still in development, from aircraft carriers.

The J-15 is still undergoing weapons tests aboard the Liaoning, including its ability to fire the PL-12 medium-range air-to-air missile, PL-8B short-range air-to-air missile and YJ-83 anti-ship missile. Unconfirmed reports also indicate that China is testing the electronic warfare and air-refueling versions of the J-15. It remains optimistic to say China will produce a total of 35 J-15 fighters in 2015 as many Chinese experts have claimed, the Kanwa report said.

Since neither the Liaoning and Vikramaditya operate a catapult for launching planes, the only option both vessels can select as an early warning aircraft is the Russian-built Ka-31 helicopter. Even if India successfully convinces the United States to sell it the E-2D early warning aircraft, the aircraft can only be operated from a land base, Kanwa said. If China's future carriers are built with ski-jump ramps, they will be no different from the Liaoning.

However, a senior official from the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, believed to be the location where construction of China's first domestically built carrier is underway, claimed that the Type 001A aircraft carrier will be better than both the Vikramaditya and Japan's Izumo-class helicopter destroyers.

Well, it depends on what configuration the 1st ingenious carrier takes.

If, as many of us expect, their 1st one is a Chinese made, improved version of the Liaoning, then with the Liaoning and their second carrier, the PLAN will roughly have equivalent carriers to the Virkamaditya and India's 1st indigenous carrier, the Vikrant, which has already been launched, and to which the Island was recently added.

All four of those will be STOBAR carriers.

The PLAN carriers will be larger and carry a better aircraft principle combat in the J-15...but the Indian carriers will carry more Mig-29Ks and their capabilities will be roughly equivalent when all is said and done. I do believe that the PLAN escort vessels are better all around.

The Japanese Izumo is not an apt comparison. It is not STOBAR at all and can only carry, at a maximum, 10 or so fixed wing STOVL aircraft. If those aircraft were ever F-35Bs, then even with those few aircraft the Izumo class would be something that either the Chinese or the Indians would have to greatly respect...even if it is a much smaller air wing. But they Japanese would not be likely to use them, as offensive, power projection tools.

You see, the Izumo is not billed as a fixed wing aircraft carrier. It is billed and designed to predominantly serve as the center piece of an ASW task force and carrier helicopters to accomplish that function. Any F-35Bs it may ultimately carry would be much more for self defense.

It will not be until the Japanese build a vessel that is meant to be primarily a fixed-wing aircraft carrier that such comparisons should be made.

As it is, the PLAN in the Liaoning and the follow on first indigenous carrier have very strong capabilities, and they have built up the DDG and FFG escorts as well as the infrastructure to support them.

Ultimately the Chinese and the Indians will both build CATOBAR carriers and we can make a comparison and comments regarding those two classes at that date. IMHO, it is probably premature to make them now.

Jeff Head is far far better than Pinkov (Kanwa), Kanwa would be much much better and credible under Jeff.

Kanwa is only good for people who know little of military or know nothing about it. Also Kanwa often "steal" idea and/or photos from many forums, including this forum

....
Jeff, the Module in Shanghai clearly show a cat-installation; so this carrier (if it become real) of course would be better than indian or japanese design

Indian development carrier aircraft has a single nosewheel -> no use with catapult is planned.

Chinese development carrier aircraft have a twin nosewheel -> use with catapult is possible.

Indian Naval LCA (Naval Tejas ) are designed to be used on Vikrant class carriers, i.e. STOBAR . What would happen later (AMCA project etc ) is a matter of speculation .

The biggest thing for China's carrier air wing now is J-15 production. We know there were 10 J-15's around september. Does anyone know how many there are now ? And does anyone know where the Liaoning is at the moment ?

my theory around that is they don't have that many AL-31Fs remaining, so their production J-15s at some point will have to be using FWS-10. And J-15 require a special type of Taihang engine which may not have been deemed ready for mass production yet.
