PLA Small arms

If you have a machine gun that can be hauled around relatively easily I don't see why you can't consider it general purpose. Except maybe the .50 rounds weighs too much for foot infantry to carry?
PLA motor pool is small up untill relatively recently , therefor PLA have to keep the ability to be foot moblie more then the US army .
Even a 7.62 ammo is quite a handful for the troops to carry around . let alone a 50cal with all of it's equipment ,a tripod , a lot of ammo , and even a spare barrel, so battle order for a 50cal section is 3-5 man depend mostly of how many ammo you would want to carry.
That compared to a GPM that on paper is 2 man team ,but mostly is just 1 guy alot of times on the field.
Think of it this way , I used to go on gurd duty with 5 mags of 5.56 , a short barrel M16 ,a helment, an old M-1967 load carry equitment with 2 canteens, and that felt a lot of weight to stand around for hours on end , let alone to march or run in. And that would be less then what a 2020's kit would be , with the radio , batteries , ceremic platings ,night vision, and all kind of gizmos on the gun itself.
Every gram feels like an extra , and for a typical 200-400 meter engagement, a 7.62 fired at you would still be an emotionally significant event, no one would be lying on the ground thinking " oh it fine, it is a 7.62 so it only has 20% of kinetic energy of a 50cal "

The QJZ171 only weighs around 18 kilos including bipod so is entirely man-portable if you only consider the gun itself. I would guess a 2 man team can and will use the gun effectively in combat, though ammunition is not as abundant as one would prefer.

I wouldn't be so sure about that , for the most part 50cal is just too much weight for troops on foot and compare to GMP it main benefits is anti-metarial role , as in shooing light armored vehicle, shooting through walls , and the 500m + engagement.
In PLA service this role is already filled by the grenade lunchers in the weapon plattons , and that thing can do airbust munitions, and has more payload for anti armor work.
There is a reason that they almost no army in the world that would put 50cal as a standered battle order item for the infantry company or platoon , yet most would give them few GPM and a AT missle and light motars even when the latter weighs a lot more , It is all about trade offs, you have a limited amount of total weight you can carry and fight with , for a 4 men weapon team what would you have ? a 82mm mortar , 2 HJ12 or 2 GPM ? or 2 50cal ? what would add a more firepower capability to the platoon ?

PLA's weapons platoon is still composed of mortar squads, heavy machine gun squads, and grenade launcher squads. There is no such thing as grenade launchers replacing heavy machine guns.

It looks like a new recoilless gun is being put into production. Below are excerpts from an article about a mobilization meeting for the mass production. The company in question is the Hebei Yanxing Machinery Co., which specializes in recoilless guns.
