Historical reasons. AK47 is called Type 56 submachine gun while SKS is Type 56 semi auto rifle. Back then assault rifle where a new thing.
Also in Chinese SMG 冲锋枪 means (storm hilltop rifle) which can be interpreted as assault rifle.

Exactly correct. The AK series was originally classed as a Submachine gun. The same for the MP43 that inspired it later reclassified as the STG44. This reclassification became retroactive but to this day AK and it’s various iterations are still sometimes referred to as Submachine guns.
