Still wondering about a serious use case for these.

When it's tasked with protecting Beijing and is part of the best trained and equipped unit in China every inevitability is considered.

And as for the missions of the gyro units:
"geographic information, air service information, battlefield monitoring and digital transmission, enhancing the units command and control capability and ability to conduct accurate air defense."

As for why gyro-copters over unmanned drones/helicopters/aircraft, probably an if all else fails or a quick cheap alternative during peace time.

Some interesting take by @pplsartofwar on Twitter regarding the PLAGF. IIRC, he has served in the US military in the past.

His main takes:
1. Recruitment. Its up. And the PLAG, the army component is aggressively expanding its size. Across all military occupational specialities. They aren't having problems filling the numbers. And recruits are enthusiastic after the recent events.
2. Individual gear. This is a big one we had a discussion on. Part of the more recent reforms aim to upgrade and modernize the gear. From boots to utilities to dress uniforms. Soldiers are being rapidly issued the newer gear to conform with a newer policy of a professional army.
3. Doctrine has changed too. The NCOs (sergeants) I've talked to have emphasized that small unit tactics training and weapons handling time has been given higher priority than 5 years ago. This has even extended to auxiliary units like the 武警, who normally do not get this.
4. Military discipline is another. Soldiers are a rowdy bunch. We like to drink, f*ck, and cause trouble often.

Non judicial punishments handed down by NCOs have gotten stricter. And they're given more leeway to punish. Judicial punishment by the military courts is less tolerant of outside shennanigans.
5. Theres also the GWOT affect. Soldiers are now allowed to carry their camo assault packs outside of duty. With a flag patch representing their branch.

This is being done to push a more visible awareness of the military in society (theory by a sergeant)
We should keep in mind this is their impressions. Its not and should not be taken as 100% truth. And we were 10 cans deep at this point. The senior sergant also had a thick Hubei accent, so that complicated this.

Screen captures of a promo video from China Electronics Corporation (CEC) that appears to show a battlefield AI system (as applied to an urban environment). According to the captions, the AI system is capable of mapping the battlefield, designating special buildings (schools, hospitals), and automatically identify threats among civilians, track their movements, and ID their weapons for elimination.

This is precisely the type of technology I imagine they would use for a Taiwan scenario.

Civilian mapping, on the ground intelligence, etc. could utilize computer modelling and processing to identify possible ambush positions.

Real time surveillance on hot spots and additional computer analysis such as the above could provide targeting info for precision strikes with shorter range guided weapons such as mortars or even smart grenades.
