Pictures of KJ-500 have been around for couple of months now. Its dome is fixed like KJ-2000 in order to cover 360 degree at all time. Some on Chinese forum claim that it's a generation ahead of KJ-2000.

Even if not an AWACs it is claerly an AEW bird: Y-8GX-8 spotted finally clear and large. And with a "9241" (???) it seems to be assigned to the 2. Naval Division, 6. Regiment !!

The Radar Arrays suggest the potential that this is meant to be a J-Stars like platform. The large nose array undersides arrays and side arrays using AESA systems to map out surface targets.

I'd say it is more of an ELINT or SIGINT aircraft than a radar mapping/battle control plane. The arrays are more likely to be ESM arrays. If it were similar to JSTARS you'd see a larger underbelly array.

Yeah this aircraft was in yellow primer a while ago good to see it's now operational

This type of aircraft is used for intercepting and picking up electronic signals, every piece of naval equipment has a distinct electronic emissions profiles they can be detected through these emissions bit like heat emissions for aircraft

This is why many modern navy's and carrier strike groups practice silence in electronic emissions where they turn off anything not deemed important and try and hide while on the move military satellites also can track ships through their electronic emissions

That is the job for this aircraft to eavesdrop and pick up electronic signatures of naval assets it does not map the surface per say

Electronic emissions and acoustic signatures are important when the hunting starts
