MOSCOW —In this video grab an enormous Russian convoy of about 280 trucks carrying humanitarian aid has left Moscow for southeastern Ukraine, Russian television and news agencies reported Tuesday.

The Russian aid has been an object of suspicion for Ukraine and its Western allies, who accuse the Kremlin of trying to use it as a stealth method to invade its smaller neighbor with armed forces to support the besieged separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk.

But President Vladimir V. Putin and other senior Russian officials all insisted on Monday that it was a peaceful convoy coordinated with the International Committee of the Red Cross.

In this picture taken on Tuesday, Aug. 12, a woman with a child talks to Ukraine's National Guard soldiers who have returned from combat operations against pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine's east, near the walls of the parliament in Kiev, Ukraine. Since a separatist insurgency broke out in eastern Ukraine in March, entire swaths of Ukrainian society _ either through a government summons or their own patriotism _ have suddenly been thrust into battle, many of them with little or no combat experience. With the government desperate for more fighters and medics, a draft has brought in a wave of needed additions to what had been a neglected army. And amid a surge of patriotic indignation tipping over into martial fervor, volunteer battalions have proven an indispensable boost as well. (AP Photo/Efrem Lukatsky)

Captain
These guys look more like soldiers than a police officers!!! Helmets look to be MICHs, Camo, strap-flag and patches are pretty much Army style and the dude also has a dagger on his back!!

When policing a nation where the civilians are more heavily armed than the police of other countries, it'll be suicidal of them to not arm themselves as heavily as they have. Even then, there are so many cases where the suspects can be just as heavily armed and well equipped; rifles and body armour are comparatively easy to acquire by civilians in the US.
