Iran to Put Maersk Tigris on Sale to Pay for Local Company's Losses

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Marshall Islands-flagged trade ship, Maersk Tigris, that was seized in Persian Gulf waters last week over a legal dispute between Iran's Pars Tala'eyeh Oil Products Company and the Danish shipping line Maersk will be put on tender for sale.

The announcement was made by Hamid-Reza Jahanian, the managing director of Pars Tala'eyeh Oil Products Company which is involved in the legal row with Maersk.

He said the ship will be put on sale to compensate for the $10 billion loss that Pars Tala'eyeh company has suffered and also a 5-billion-rial fine ($140,000) to the Iranian government.

The meetings between Maersk and officials from Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization have failed to make any significant progress to resolve the case, Jahanian said.

According to Iranian officials, all crew members have been free since the ship was seized to "travel to anywhere they like or stay on board the vessel and they have not at all experienced any limitation"

Deputy DM: Iran Working to Increase Range of Air-Based Missiles to 300km

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian aerospace experts are working on a plan to produce a new air-launched missile which can destroy targets as far as 300km, Deputy Defense Minister and Head of Iran's Aerospace Organization General Mehdi Farahi announced on Tuesday.

"In the last 6 months, we have seen the display of the air-based Qader and Nasr missiles as well as Fakour 90 missiles," Gen. Farahi said, addressing a forum in Tehran today, and added, "The project for the production of the air-to-air Fakour 90 missiles started in the (Persian) year 1390 (March 2011-March 2012) which passed the final tests during the 10-Day Dawn celebrations (January 31-February 11 of 2013) of the (Persian) year 1391 (March 2012-March 2013)."

"A while ago, the air-based Qader missile was also fired by an F4 fighter jet and hit the target precisely after flying 200km in range," he added.

"The next stage in the Aerospace Organization is (building) an air-based 300-km missile which we will witness in the future," Farahi said.

He also referred to Iran's strategy to develop its aerospace equipment, and said, "The world is moving towards building smart missiles and pilotless fighter jets, and thus, our approach is comprised of equipping and arming drones both from offensive and defensive viewpoints."

Iran announced on Tuesday that the country's experts are building a new long-range air-to-air missile system named 'Maqsoud' (Objective).

He said that the Iranian Armed Forces are now working on 11 top level projects in the aerospace industry as well as 17 air-based weapons system production projects.

Hejazi also underlined that the targeting problem in the home-made air-based Qader (Mighty) and Nasr (Victory) missile systems has been resolved giving the Iranian Armed Forces a high maneuvering power.

"By designing and building these air-based missiles for the first time in Iran, the Air Forces' fighter jets will be equipped with advanced air-based Qader missiles with a range of over 200km and air-based Nasr missiles with a range of over 35km and their operational and deterrence power will increase powerfully," Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan told reporters at the unveiling ceremony in Tehran.

EXCLUSIVE: Maersk Tigris Freed, Leaves Iran's Waters

13940212000346_PhotoI.jpg

"Today the (Maersk Tigris) ship was released and it left the Iranian territorial waters," Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham said.

She said all the ship crew members were fully safe and healthy when they left Iran's waters.

Meantime, Pars Tala'eyeh Oil Products Company officials hoped that the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization has received "sufficient assurances and a solemn promise" from Maersk Line company for guaranteed compensation of their financial losses as mentioned in the court ruling.

Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari had announced on Tuesday that Maersk Tigris will be freed after its owner, Maersk Line Shipping Co. pays compensation money to the Iranian company that had sued it.

His remarks came after Managing-Director of Pars Tala'eyeh Oil Products Company Hamidreza Jahanian said Maersk Tigris had been kept in custody because it owed $10mln to his company.

"Unfortunately, a number of containers sent by Pars Tala'eyeh Oil Products Company through the Maersk Line Shipping Co. were not delivered to the customer in Jebel Ali in 2003, which initiated financial disputes between us and Maersk Line Shipping Co. then," Jahanian told FNA on Saturday.

Uhhh...so the Iranian government insists that they are owed a lot of money be Maersk and that they are going to sell the vessel to get payment and relief via FarsNews on Wednesday because Maersk is unwilling to meet their demands...and then the next day release the vessel?

Then that very article that says the vessel has been released, turns right around and says it will only be released on condition of payment, otherwise all of its goods and the ship itself will be sold.

What?

Sounds like either the English translation is all messed up, or that they cannot get their own story straight.

Hwever, based on ABC News, the Wall Street Journal, Yahoo News, Reuters, AP and others...it seems pretty clear that the ship has indeed been released.

has been released and the crew members are all in good condition, according to the ship's operator.

Rickmers Ship Management told The Associated Press in an e-mail Thursday that the MV Maersk Tigris was released following a court order. It will now continue its scheduled voyage to Jebel Ali, in the

, where it will be met by representatives from Rickmers and others.

Iranian forces seized the ship April 28 as it traversed the Strait of Hormuz. It was taken to Bandar Abbas, the main port of Iran's navy, under escort by Iranian patrol boats.

Iran claimed that the Danish shipping company that chartered the ship, Maersk Line, owed money to an Iranian firm. Rickmers' spokesman Cor Radings would not comment on whether any money was paid to settle the case with Iran, saying in a telephone interview from Amsterdam "that is up to Maersk and the Iranian authorities, our responsibility is with the vessel and crew."

He said his company had confirmed that the ship had left the Iranian port with all 24 crew members on board and all of its cargo, and that it was expected to arrive in Jebel Ali late Thursday night or early Friday morning.

Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization said in a statement that the government had received the appropriate assurances from Maersk Line. The Danish company had, "ensured the provision of a letter of guarantee for the enforcement of the judicial decision," the statement said.

In Copenhagen, Maersk Line spokesman Michael Storgaard told AP that the case "is not over yet," but confirmed that the company was committed to covering the $163,000 debt claimed by the Iranian firm, if necessary. "We have said we would be willing to pay the $163,000 but for now we have not paid anything," he said.

Storgaard said lawyers from both sides will now begin looking into the matter.

I believe Iran screwed up here and gave itself a big black eye internationally.

In addition, US warships are now taking allied vessels through the Straits and will not brook any further interference.

But it is not solved. Iran received NO Payment. Nada. Lawyers will now discuss it.

So, give me a break. Yes, Iran absolutely screwed up by detaining a ship on the high seas that was flagged to a foreign country for a supposed payment dispute worth $163,000 dollars.

They spent more than that...far more...in sending those ships out to detain and bring the ship in..

That is not the way civilized nations handles a payment dispute such as this.

You know this, Shahryar...I know it...the whole word knows it, and that is my point.

Activities like this paint Iran as a rogue.

Maersk has made it clear that they would negotiate and handle such a dispute legally. To date, they have paid Iran nothing...and a good lawyer will now show that by delaying the ship for this amount of time, the damages done to Maersk will amount to well over $163,000 dollars.

Anyone who views this objectively and will think critically about it knows this...including the Iranians. So it was clearly not about the money.

As I said, internationally, Iran screwed up, plain and simple, because of the reputation they are establishing for themselves amongst other industrialized nations.
