according to the dec. 2011 issue of asia pacific defence monthly, tension between south korea and US over accusation that Korea clone copy the "Tiger eye" reccon pod.
this is not first time accusation,Lockheed charge that south korean made torpedo is clone copy of lockheed madetorpedo sold to S.K. navy.and K-21 APC is clone copy of bradley.
US suspect that the thief of US military technology could even more massive.reason why they never catch was South Korea simple unable to duplicate some key technology.
Korean newspaper was told by Soth korean DOD ,this accusation could effect future south korean-US military relation.already pentagon refuse to provide Global Hawk UAV to korean AF.this aould also affect SKAF upgrade program for fleet of F-16.
US inisist that the upgrade program be carry in the US plant rather than in Korea.
To prevent over reliance of US, Korea is diversing there military purchase.but also frustrate by the US to block it.

The US will be careful. With a nice modern navy and a competent air force South Korea might sign a security treaty with China. That would greatly reduce the threat of war in the region.

Strange thing, The Korean side is easy to understand, they need more weapons than their money can buy in the US arsenal and they consider it cheaper to reverse engineer and built them at home. Now that really poses a question, because none would complain that the US doesn't produce her equipment in numbers so the reverse engineering benefit for small numbers should be offset by producing large numbers of equipment one has developed on his own. That such an economic calculation doesn't seem to apply to this case could mean that the faithful ally South Korea is overpaying American weapons, just like Saudi Arabia. Ways out? Give the South Koreans a share in weapon development and production.

I doubt that South Korea would change the alliance system because of that.

This is much more than just saving money on procurement, it is more about national military industrial complex. The Japanese are a good example. Doesn't matter how expensive it is to localize the production, they'll do anything to achieve it; despite of how small the production may be. Just look at their arsenal, F2 (F16 copy), OH-1, F86, F4, F15, P3C, and etc. For the Koreans it is the same matter.

As a matter of fact, no one wants to depend the fate of their nation upon another country that is built by merchants. The Soviets might be crazy, but they are ideologically driven and therefore more reliable, whereas the U.S. is more interest driven. You never know what will happen to you next.
