By better long-range performance you mean penetration power and not actual range, right? Because it seems a heavier bullet would be counter-productive in that case.

Heavier rounds with slightly less velocity can have more inertia than lighter rounds with higher velocities.

The US military has also been looking at rounds based on the 5.56X45 case, such as a 6mm version, along with the 6.8 SPC. The upsized designs allow the use of most of the same parts. The onlypart which would need to be replaced would be the barrel. With the 6.8 SPC, the magazine followers, bolt, and barrel would all have to be replaced. Still, the US military has not stopped considering these rounds, and the 6.8 is in limited use.
