North Korea to increase 'Military Deterent'.

If the DPRK fired 6 missiles, and one of the them was the Taepeodong 2, what were the others? Were they short or medium-range weapons?
The faliure of the Taepodong certainly was a humiliation. And I don't think North Korea will get any aid now. They clearly still can't reach the U.S.

The video on this article claims it was tracked by U.S. radar - good thing that it didn't reach the U.S., because if the defence system failed as predicted, it would have been a humiliation for Bush rather than Kim-jong-Il.

The White House briefing posted earlier (worth a read) said

1 x Taepodong
2 x Scud
2 x Nodong
1 x Scud or Nodong

The 7th one has been described by South Korean military as short-range so preusmably another Scud or Nodong.

*************** They seem to think that by pissing people off it will make them more likely to agree to their demands. They forget that the US has faced off against terrorists many times and after 9/11 are not likely to back down in the face of such threats.

If North Korea ever was able to present itself as a real threat to the US, rather than just a potential one, Pyongyang would be reduced to rubble in a matter of minutes.

No racist comment!

Just a thought on the long range missile. I understand that it failed after 40 seconds.

So a question for all you missile buffs: is that long enoung to test the second stage firing? If so, you cannot discount the possibility of the launch being deliberatly terminated by North Korea in order to defuse the political situation.

I am assuming that the other missiles were all single stage but used the same guidance targeting systems etc. If that is the case, then these features would have been satisfactually tested by the short range missiles. All they had to do with the Ta-Dong?? was to test the multi-stage ignition.

No I am not propaganderising, I am simply presenting a logical alternative explaination.

from our esteemed armchair political scientist Fu Man Chu.

Thanks for the compliment - I'm glad you think highly of me. :D

clearly unaware of the concept of political pressure and the adage "visibility is worth a thousand men". (I made that up)

There is difference between pressure and making a threat. North Korea wants attention and is frustrated that it isn't getting what it wants. So it thinks that a display of "military might" will bring everyone back to the table.

That is plain stupid. Such threats are not going to work. Indeed it might actually result in North Korea getting hurt. Japan has imposed sanctions and is considering "regulating" remittances from North Koreans in Japan back home. That would seriously hurt North Korea's income.

If Kim wants to hurt his country, he should just cut out the middle-man and start shooting his own people. Oh, wait, he already does that......

what's next? A sweeping generalization of every other political entity on the globe?

I would answer that point if I knew what you meant.

I don't know about the second-stage, but I don't think they deliberately blew it up. They wanted to make a big show of the thing to put pressure on the US and others - that couldn't happen if it blew up prematurely. So it did go wrong for them, and I think they'll be going back to the "drawing board" (as it were).

Also the other missiles were apparently fired to make lots of big bangs and help the propaganda monkeys say everything went fine if indeed the big-boy didn't work - which was the case as it turned out. There was no real necessity for them to fire the other 6.

Not exactly my friend. A missile test doesn't always prove to be successful. That's why tests are conducted in the first place. Many of China's ICBM tests failed miserably as well for quite some time. Now, is anybody laughing at China's ICBM missiles? The North Koreans will probably go back and try to correct what went wrong. Scientists and ordinary people alike learn from mistakes.
well, that is if the scientists don't get shot for this humiliation on the "great leader". Sometimes, I wonder where Kim got the balls to carry out all these tests. Actually, it would've been the best if an AD ship was there and shot down those missiles. One can only guess little Kim's reaction.

here is my opinion being a right wing american nationalist.

If NK wants to fire off missiles for test it should be aloud to do so. I mean come on..... does anyone really think NK would send a nuke at the U.S. They would cease to exist as a nation about 2 hours after that happened. NK is a regional problem with a puny economy and what appears to be a little eccentric for a dictator. BUT they are their own country and they have a fundamental right to conduct national defence tests of its missile programs.

NOW if they come out and say that the U.S should be burned in a sea of fire or a U.S ally should cease to exist as another country like Iran does . THEN action should be taken.
