I was thinking, if space intelligence capabilities become stronger in the future, will there come a day when all ocean surfaces become exposed with nowhere to hide? Will all surface ships have to find a way to hide below the water’s surface?
That simulated attack was done without space assets actually, but I agree with your point. I think the future is underwater.

I wouldn't draw too much conclusion from publicly available studies, it should be taken with the same size grain of salt as the CSIS study on a Taiwan invasion.

Real salvo size in a hot war is probably multiple times larger, while defenses should also be more effective. We have already had a glimpse of future ABM systems from recent conflicts and the conclusion should be that hypersonics do not guarantee a kill. We also have not seen proper fleet air defense for a very long time whilst the technology itself has undergone fundamental changes, basically a case of we don't know until it goes hot.

I think any discussion of future capabilities must also factor in costs.

Given how expensive labour, materials and everything else has gotten (thanks, infinite money printing), the numbers game is making a comeback. Quality alone is not enough when you only have a tiny number of those platforms/systems.

Ukraine has demonstrated this. If there isn't a major capability gap between the two sides (as there won't be between China and the US in the near future), the side with greater numbers has the advantage.

It seems like in the post Cold War era we went too far toward high end, expensive capability.

It may be time to turn back a little toward good ol fashioned quantity; obviously, not in the Soviet mass mobilization way.

What do you think?
US won WW2 by printing an ungodly amount of ships and aircraft. A shitload of good enough has always been better than best-in-class in insufficient numbers. And it goes without saying that when it comes to quantity, China is God.

Apparently a 1:50-scaled ship hull model for a study on the tumblehome wave-piercing hull design (like the ones on Zumwalt) conducted by the South China University of Technology (SCUT). Posted by (sigh...) @伏尔戈星图 on Weibo.

The 1:50 scale would mean that the actual ship has a dimension of 180 meters (length) x 24 meters (beam) x 7 meters (draft), i.e. slightly smaller than Zumwalt.

Here is one probable, fan-made (which I believe is quite viable, reasonable and probably the closest/most realistic to what the PLAN might/could be doing WRT the 052D-successor class of DDG that I could find) CGI illustration of the "real brand-new model of the 6000-ton destroyer with a substantial increase in combat capability" mentioned by pop3 some months ago.

8000 tons standard displacement (I'm guessing 8500-9000 tons full), hull design akin to the 054B FFG, broadly-similar weapon loadouts as the 052D other than the 80x UVLS (which is 16x more than on 052D), upgraded radar and sensor systems (I do hope a scaled-down from 055), integrated mast stemming from the 054B FFG, and one larger helicopter hangar that can fit heli and UAV.

Made by @大包CG on Weibo, with the 054B FFG alongside for comparison.

Personally I don't care too much for it.
I sincerely hope the nxt PLAN DDG gets rid of the unsightly VHF Yagi and has dual hangars.

Why would China not just invest in more Type 055 and eventually newer variants of them?

Those are the currently most modern air defense destroyers in the world, and their upgrade potential as well as additional numbers potential is massive.

055 and 054Bs would fill out the future forces, with the 055 being the primary area defense destroyer and the 054B replacing the specialized smaller destroyer that 052Ds represent, as well as the 054As.

The Type 052D has combined diesel and gas propulsion. It is probably a lot more efficient at using fuel at cruise speeds than the Type 055.
It is also way more capable than the Type 054. Even the B type.
The shipyards also seem to be able to churn it out much faster.

The only complaint could be it is less efficient to get in terms of crew and capabilities. It has roughly same crew as Type 055 but way less capability. But it is not like China is lacking in naval servicemen.

大包 makes too many speculative CGIs of his own basis, and I don't think we should be showing them here unless he (or anyone else for that matter) is making a CGI based off credible rumours.

We have a dedicated fan art and CGI thread, which you can post unsolicited CGIs onto, but do not post them onto actual military discussion threads just for the sake of "food for thought discussions".

I also want to add that "food for thought discussions" is not necessarily a good thing, in fact often it's just a waste of time and creates false expectations.
In fact, actively avoiding baseless discussion should be the goal if there is no actual credible rumours on a given topic.
