At least on the naval side, an introduction of a new platform always came with another batch of the previous generation. The second batch of the 052C while 052D was entering service. More recently, more 075 orders while the 076 is getting readied for service, more 054A orders despite the 054B, 093B despite the 095 being in construction.

PLA hedges for unforeseen teething problems with the new equipment. Sometimes, high-low mixes emerge from the procurement of the previous gen. For example the PL-12 production is still continuing despite the existence of PL-15. In other times, the previous gen is pushed to other roles. The example for this would be J-16. It is not the premier A2A asset anymore. But it will do great as a striker and defensive counter-air asset.

I think the answer is actually in your question. As you said the new generation of MBT is being tested, hence not in production yet. As the production of MBT never stops, Type 99A will continue be built until the new generation of MBT is production. And there might be a chance of overlap too. Remember the last batch of 052C?

old news, what we ve already known for years....paused for not really intense situation and a need for mass production of light tank type 15 on the plateau and other places around. Meanwhile pla asking for developing APS and RWS variant, testing new electric power/trasnmission+new gen tank prototype.....a lot stuff going on, thats why it paused for years. Now GL6 aps tested, RWS already mounted on the new batch production, they are all the reasons written on the appreance. Don't make a fuss by some random X post..

Theoretically speaking the new batches of ZTZ-99A with APS and/or RWS could be a parade only variant. Guancha trio mentioned that sometimes a batch of specially made vehicles (mostly ground based) is built for parades only. Although they'll be put into normal service afterwards usually such parade only variants aren't mass produced or widely adopted.

normally the so-called "variant" is either testing type or the ones from the army unit with modification, there is no such theory speaks batch production for "parade only". As a Chinese native speaker, I have seen hundreds of video clips introducing parade preparations.

Id where is your theory comes from, Guancha trio must refer to the 9910 test mode as basic 99 mbt in 1999 parade, but it was 20+ years ago dude. And the APS will definetly not appear on parade 99A, I am 90% sure about that.

some other img for your ref: in 2019, 70annv.parade (under the front hull decal: 阅兵车:vehicle for parade), plateau army unit selected vehicles for parade and maintance. Notice this is in service light armor version type 15. 2 years later the same vehicle was spotted in other clips had been upgraded to heavy armor version.1747639699015.png
