Why is the back of the type 99's turret so big if they don't store ammo there? What is it used for or why did they make them so much larger than the old dome turrets?
You see it's not that 99A's turret is big, it's the old dome turret tanks that are incredibly small and cramped. Make it as low profile as possible, an idea from old war experience.

Type 99A's turret is not that big, it just an illusion given by the additional spaced ERA and rear cage armour. It houses several electronic components and also gave room for the crew for more comfort as modern technology such as thermal imaging camera sights makes low profile tank obsolete.

It's actually too large. You can check some internal images. Too many space remains above the head of crews. 99A is as large as western tank but lighter, so less armor.
