New Type98/99 MBT thread

Hello,

for some time I have been looking for information about the transmission and the ZTZ99A engine, but, unfortunately, I have just started learning Chinese, so it is rather difficult for me to search for information in Chinese sources.

As far as I could understand, the engine-transmission part of the ZTZ99A consists, in fact, of two components: the 150HB-2 engine and the CH-1000 transmission unit?

For example, the question of the number of forward and reverse gears, as well as the maximum reverse speed, is still not clear? In particular, I found references to the presence of 3 (?) Reverse gears?

Or about a scheme similar to the Leopard, since, as far as I understand, when developing ZTZ99A, Chinese engineers looked at German MTU engines?

I didn't translate last time as I was in a hurry, though I saw your post on a different forum (which is supposedly more technical but alas, even they struggle with the language barrier) so it reminded me to give some clarification here.

First, we recognize that the every vehicle with a combustion engine has a powerplant and a transmission unit. The Type 99(A)'s engine is a 150HB series engine producing maximum 1200 or 1500 HP depending on the variant. The CH-1000 should be the transmission unit, if we go by the caption on your photo, where "传动" means transmission, and "传动装置" means transmission unit or drivetrain.

Without discussing the authenticity of your source, it claims the CH-1000 has 6 forward gear settings and 3 reverse gear settings, total 9 gear settings. There are two different controls to adjust two separate sets of gears. One set is 'high', 'low', and reverse', and the other set is '1', 2', and '3'. So each gear setting is a combination setting, e.g. 'low 1' or 'high 2' or 'reverse 3') rather than 1-2-3-4-5-6 like in a car.

There is a lot of technical vocabulary that I won't translate as I don't fully understand it myself. The rest of the exerpt is straightforward. It explicitly claims that, when installed on a tank, it achieved a top speed of 80 km/h in trials, and is suitable for 70 km/h on roads and 54 km/h off-road. The maximum reverse speed is 34 km/h and acceleration from 0-32 km/h takes only 6-7 seconds.

Thank you for the clarification,

yes, I tried to find information about the 99A transmission wherever I could, so I asked on the SH as well. As for the authenticity of the sources, I myself would like to get acquainted with some specialized literature on 99A, but, as far as I understand, it is simply not available in the public domain, or I could not find it. :)

In fact, there are many more questions about the achieved level of protection, the supposed filling of the armor packages, protection tests, ammunition and much more, but, first, I will try to find something in greater detail myself :)

Sadly it’s a rewound shot. Just look at the behaviour of the dust wake.
I’m wondering, why was it necessary to insert this frame, and even reverse video? Why did we never see the real reverse speed of the 99A in any of the reports, especially if the CH-1000 provides at least 3 reverse gears?
