Correct, but janes mention that in reality, the Iraqi republican guard armour is only half the strenght of typical soviet armour division.
and there is no soviet support for the iraqi, not even inteliigent.
and one more thing, Soviet doctrine for european war was massive nuclear strike..

Well, actually I finish working on the Type 99 and am working on something else. But I try to answer your question.

The Type-98/Type-99 as proposed for the export?
No The Type 99 is not for export under most circumstance. As type 99 is suppose to be China Highest armor technology and there is possibly the type 99 is going to continoue it elvouation for some time as it design in mind right from the start to be early upgrade or updated.

Do we know for sure that the engine is 1500 hp?
As far as I am concerned yes the Type 99 engine is 1500hp

if there anything else I'll try answer it

Is this the Type-99 they are talking about?

PLA uses laser imitators in "tank war"

A laser imitation system for tank battles developed in China has been used in a training exercise in the deserts of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, North China.

Experts from the PLA Beijing Military Area Command training base designed the sophisticated imitation system, according to military sources.

An exercise to check the maneuverability of the Chinese Army under real-war circumstances is now under way, with the "Red Army" brigade, from the Shenyang area command in the northeast, trying hard to break the defenses of the "Blue Army" of the PLA Beijing Military Area Command.

The exercise began on September 5 when the "Red Army" left their home barracks in northeast China, heading for the training base in North China. Since then, the "Red Army" has been attacked by warplanes and electronic and electromagnetic weapons from the "enemy" -- the "Blue Army".

After trekking 1,500 kilometers, the "Red Army" arrived at the real "battle ground" -- the training base, where the "Blue Army" lay in wait for the "enemy" troops with the newly-developed imitation system.

Since the "Red Army" knew little about the new training equipment, the "Blue Army" introduced the new technology with a laser imitation "tank battle" performance. Later, the two sides will fight a "tank war" using the imitation system.

A group of Xinhua reporters have been authorized to provide exclusive on-site coverage of the exercises.

Dear Guys:

This just in: yesterday while I was surfing CMF (Chinese Military Forum) someone (?) posted pictures of PLA Armoured Troops carrying APFSDS ammo into their T-99s!

The title of the post is 99G + ammo.

There you can clearly see (in the foreground) two soldiers with the rounds on their shoulders, the first carrying the penetrator and the fore-charge as a single unit slung over his shoulder, holding the dart with his left hand.

The second soldier carries the main charge (also on his left shoulder) supported by both hands. The men are not straining under the weight, and look relaxed (and a little bored).

Behind them you can see other soldiers also carrying APFSDS ammo for their tanks (also T-99Gs). Several things are clearly visible.

1) the base charge (containing the bulk of the propellant) seems heavier than the dart as the soldier carrying it is more careful.

2) the penetrator itself is not very long as one would expect from such a round.

3) the casing of the rounds seems to be some sort of plastic (combustible case!) and you can clearly make out on the main charge's base the small vestigial brass stub case and the extractor ring (fully rimmed case).

4) the propellant itself has a rich pink colour (I shit you not!) rather like the colour of ham... and the dart's nose/tip is made of a different material than the rest of the dart body.

5) the sabot of the dart resembles those of Western APFSDS ammo more than that of the Russian guns... at least those I have seen at Vasily Fofanov's site.

All in all, from the ammunition point of view the Chinese weapon seem to be a hybrid of Western and Russian designs.

Best Regards,

Shorter dart? Would that be due to the Type 99's autoloader problem?

Is it possible that you post the picture? Not every member (including me) have an account there.

Okay Sumdud here you go:

BTW I had problems uploading the main pic I described as it's size exceeds the forums' limit. Some help here - how do I post a larger pic?

I was surprised myself at the relatively short length of the penetrator, this deviates significantly from other countries' designs. Also, it shows that the Chinese clearly do not use a Russian type of round. The sabot design is clearly Western but the split round is reminiscent of Soviet practice.

Best Regards,

Dusky Lim

Well the Sabot tip isn't of great help since the britons have been using Short "Sticks" for their rifled 120 till their own design of encased rounds was implemented.

But it sure does tell that this Tank uses a Caroussel Autoloader! A Cold war autoloader. From here it seems a ~80cm penetrator (wich is not bad-T-72 have had 60cm penetrators and the M829a1 has had a 80cm rod). So If that's a DU pentrator then it's "meh" OK.

carousel auto loader was dead trap, according to israel army field report in 1982,the T-72 tank are highly vulnerable of brewing up.The russian refuse to accept the verdict, insist the syrian tank crews should be blame, not tank 's auto loader short coming, then come Desert storm and Chenchya conflict force the russian to abandone carousel auto loading, surprisingly the PLA still using crousel auto loading.
