I think that is just a model.

There was a picture of a Leo2 in China posted in this forum a while back which turned out to be from a company that makes life sized models as movie props.

The tank lacks the rubber track guards and rear fuel drum holders that are standard on PLA Type99s.

The transporter is also not a dedicated tank transporter. A real tank transporter would never have such long, unsupported section where the tank sits. Also look at the rear of the tank, it is being kept in place with a couple of spare tires. That will never work for a real 60 ton MBT.

I am going off memory, but the transporter here looks identical to the transporter used for the Leo2 model mentioned above.

^ Not sure about that exact set of pics (I think it's probably real), but there have been a number of pictures which indicates some sort of long calibre gun is under development for the Type 99.

Looks to me like a new model Type 99A with the new turret (incorporating the low and wide gunners sight) and a gun that is at least 25% longer (maybe even 30-35% longer).

Just my 2 cents.

Looks like the PLA is going for maximum velocity from the gun with APFSDS ammunition.

How well is Type-99 turret protected against something like RPG/EFP shots? Some people claim that those blocks covering turret side are only pure RHA blocks, but I find that claim hard to believe.

Just watched clip from Syria where T-72 gets hit behind the turret and only seconds later it explodes, I would assume that Chinese designers are aware of this sort of weak points.

I think the first thing to remember is that, most clips of tanks exploding are staged -> it is just very unlikely that a cameramen have his high speed camera setup to see a hit and most hit do not result in an instantaneous combustion with flames. propellant and high explosive burn really quickly, any hits you see flames jetting out is generally done with an explosive charge and a slow burning fuel like gasoline which burns with a visible yellow/orange flame and not just a flash of white.

Regarding if the modules are rolled homo armor or not; is kinda irrelevant. the Presence of the blocks indicated that different suites of armor can be installed when needed/developed. So in essence, they can be ERA, NERA, Ceremic, some fancy armor...
