New class PLAN Assault Vessel. Designation?

What's the Chinese Army doing with an amphibious ship? Since it's not a river patrol boat, PLAN would jealously guard their turf on ships.
Same with the US Army.

Many people do not kow it, but the US Army operates a LOT of vessels.

Landing craft, logistical craft, RO RO vessels, cargo vessels.

No major surface combatants and no submarines, but plenty of support vessels.

For example, all 35 of these vessels are operated by the US Army:

judging from the photo, the PLA RoRo ship is quite small, has a beam of around 15 meters at most. Its vehicle deck can probably accommodate only 2 vehicles abreast. If the ship has typical L:B and depth ratio, it would displace around 5000 tons at most, probably significantly less. Its height suggests it is not designed for really rough weather. This is essentially a coastal vehicle ferry, not an amphbious or any sort of potentially strategic military transport. The presence of a helipad but absence of any organic helicopter support facility suggests it has limited capability to transfer stores by helicopters.

I suspect it is a one stop shop supply/support vessel for PLA garrisons on larger near-shore islands.

I am guessing between 3,500 and 4,000 tons full load...quitre a bit more than the 2,000 listed by Jane's...but then again, Jane's also did not say that the 2,000 tons was the full load either.

My guess is that this vessel would be used to transport small vehicles, equipment, troops, and perhaps supplies to areas no futher out than the first island chain, within the confines of the China Sea. The major method is Ro Ro so that means islands and facilities with the appropriate facilities.

Butr as we find out more, we will be able to make more specific observations.

Jane’s Defense pointed to a new pocket multirole Assault Ship of around 2k tons (empty?) displacement. Aside from the excitement of a potentially new class of amphibious 'training' ships, it’s also worthy to note the ship is a PLA project and not PLAN (imagine the turf battle that baby generated in the Chinese General Staff!). Anyone has additional details/rumors on this baby?

The PLA has long maintained a fleet of of medium-sized, flat-bottomed landing and assault ships to supplement the larger ships of the PLA Navy.

If the PLA has long maintained a fleet of assault ships, why would this new one be any turf battle?

Although I am intrigued by the designation "Assault Ship". What is different than from a landing ship like the type 072s aside from size?

A few more pictures. Still looking for the designatuion/Type. but it appears to be a multi-role support vessel of some sort.

Apparently it was constructed at Dalian Songliao Shipyard and has both the stern ramp, and a smaller bow ramp for roll-on/roll-off operations. The front ramp does not allow for beach deployment. The aft landing pad is for helicopter or vertical unmanned aerial vehicle (VUAV) operations with no hangar. It has four turrets for twin 23 mm cannon.

Will keep looking.

designation is not yet known at the time. it just finished sea trial recently. In one of the photo taken at the time of its launch, there is a banner that calls it simply as "Army RoRo Transport".

also from CDF.
There is also a new, somewhat similar looking, training ship AL201. Fisher claims the new RoRo ship has a primarily training purpose. I think he is confusing the RoRo ship with the AL201.

Two questions;

How did the China Defense fanbois miss a 5k ton assault ship during construction in Dalian?

What other ships have been missed?

This ship will most likely be used for transfer of army personnel and equipment in Bo Hai Bay area, as seen in the attached mao of Bo Hai, the shortest route to sent reinforcement to areas near North Korea will be through the Bo Hai Bay.

Also remember just not too long ago there were pictures on PLA armoured vehicles and personnel using civilian RO-RO ships in their drills in North East China, I can't post these photo since I crashed my original hard disc and lost them. PLA rather have their own RO-RO ship than depending on the civilian ships.
