IMHO, reporting names should be short and something that won't make you laugh. Imagine yourself in a dogfight and this coming over the radio, "I got a Fagot on my ass... and I can't shake 'em."

Why can't the NATO use convincing names like Devil, Hellhouse, or even Smasher? These names like Flouder, Farmer, Fishbed... how do these guys even come up with this?

well the reason was not to glorify your opponents equipment, and raise unwarenes among your own troops that are going to use those names...the names are therefore either dishminishing or even sligthly offensive towards the equipment, but they are mented to be enemy, so I think such policy is kinda natural;)

Just curious, is there an unoficial term for the chinese as a whole in the US? Just as Krauts, Ivan, Charlie ... :)
I mean no disrespect, it just came to my mind.

Do you mean the chinese race? because I heard that some people call chinese people chinks (which is a really bad word and you should never use it, it is equivelent of calling black people nigg>>)

Not really, I think the terms were applied in lax military jargon to refer to certain military opponents like Russia (Ivan), the Vietkong (Charlie), or the Germans (Krauts)...
I would not know it is a refferance to races.

All fighter names starts with F, hence farmer, fagot, flanker, fulcrum. I suppose you can propose fucker, but I doubt you would get far.

There is generally a limit imposed to how salty a Military designation can get the Mig 15 got it's back in 1947 it was one of the first to get a reporting name.
