Since I am going in for major surgery on Wednesday at MD Anderson, we decided on Saturday to drive the 225 miles down to Corpus and see the USS Lexington, CV-16, US Navy Museum ship.
She was an Essex class carrier, also known as the "Blue Ghost" because the Japanese announced six times that they had sunk her...but never did.
She fought from 1943 through the end f the war. From Tarawa to Tokyo Bay.
After the war she received the full Essex upgrades woth the angled deck, larger elevators, stronger steam catapult, etc.
She served until 1991...for 48 years.
I would recommedn anyone taking the time to see one of the fiver US NAvy Aircraft Carrier museum ships located in San Diego, Los Angeles, Corpus Christie, Virginia, and New York City.
Well worth your time.
Almost any nation outside of the US, Russia, China, the UK, and France would be happy to have one of these ship modernized.
