Mace, you've descended into a bit of a strange rant about white supremacists that clearly have nothing to do with the disconnect between reviews from critics and ordinary people on Mulan and other popular films.

I'm sure that some people don't like Brie Larson because of her positions on some issues, but these days most actresses are feminists. Gal Gadot is a feminist - she said that if you're not a feminist you're sexist. That's pretty clear-cut. If it was as simple as "I hate this film because feminism", there's no way there would have been alignment between fans and critics on Wonder Woman. If there's a difference in how Larson and Gadot are viewed, it's probably because the former seems rather bitter and the latter much friendlier.

Also, even if we might agree that sometimes film critics support bad films because of politics, it's hardly groundbreaking for a film about a Chinese story of an Asian woman to have an ethnically Chinese cast or for the lead role to go to a woman, especially when there have been other films on the same subject.

There was no internet before. If the internet had been established in 1980 you might have seen similar reactions.

Anyway, the fact there are people who dislike (or like) films for stupid reasons isn't news. The disappointing thing is that many critics no longer judge films on whether they're likely to wow audiences but whether they fulfill some abstract criteria.

These guys also hate Gal Gadot. They hated how successful Wonder Woman was and that also lead to Captain Marvel being made. The very things the alt-right incels hate. Yeah the people complaining happen to be also the alt-right complaining about how white men are being attacked by Hollywood. They don't want diversity in movies. They want the good ole days where it was only white men being the good guys.

They want John Wayne. Do you think the hate for Gal Gadot is also due to her not being American?

Depends... the Alt-right in the US are anti-Semitic. "Jews will not replace us!" You know... they killed Jesus. People on the right who care about the Jews and Israel because when they're destroyed by the wrath of God, it's a sign of the second coming of Jesus Christ. No one else can do the deed or Jesus doesn't come back. That's why they're protective of Israel.

Brett Ratner was kicked off as producer of Wonder Woman because of Gal Gadot herself. She was an early target. Why? Because he went around telling everyone that had sex with Olivia Munn when it was a lie. Had nothing to do with anything Ratner did with Gal Gadot or on set of the movie hence it was also the beginnings of the term "cancel culture" they coined. The Alt-Right hates Olivia Munn because she got a man with a record of child molesting to be cut from scenes on the movie The Predator. There's all these chain of events and none of them have anything to do with movies being bad to why they hate.

Mace, you've just made my point for me. Movie-goers and critics liked Wonder Woman in equal measure because it was a good film. Whereas films like Captain Marvel did worse with viewers because it wasn't that good. Misogynists that didn't like Captain Marvel also didn't like Wonder Woman - but you can see that their influence is negligible because nearly 90% of ordinary people liked Wonder Woman (87% on rotten tomatoes).

As I said, when films bomb with audiences studios just whine that they're victims instead of engaging with valid criticism of the movie.

The question is why film critics decide to defend bad films when some years ago they would have been more critical. It could be linked to how many large game reviewers often praise average or bad games that lack content, are overpriced, buggy, etc.

Captain Marvel didn't fail in the box office.

I didn't say it failed at the box office. I said it did worse with viewers, i.e. their opinions after watching the film. You don't get your money back if you didn't like it.

Honestly, I have no idea why you've felt the repeated need to hijack a conversation about how out of touch film critics are by talking about the alt-right.

Spin. Captain Marvel made over $1 billion dollars. Ever hear of word of mouth. Just like you don't trust critics reviews because they don't match what regular people say now you want everyone to believe making over a billion doesn't count. How about beating Captain America and Thor? Apparently these alt-right incels have influence you since you literally repeat all their spin.

Mulan has pulled out all the stops to attract a Chinese audience. The movie that adapts a local legend has an all-star cast with multiple household names in China. This stirred up

, but now that reviews are coming in, it looks like that early goodwill is dying.

“It’s like that feeling when you go to a Western Chinese restaurant and have a pretty weird Chinese meal,” one user said of the new Mulan on Q&A site Zhihu.

My guess is that we won't know if Mulan makes a profit or not because Disney won't have to disclose how much money they make from it via their streaming services.
