Is Sharon Stone a great actress? She was only on the A-List because she was pretty and showed her vagina in a movie. It was a combination of the two not separate that made her popular. Europe, which they tell everyone is all about sophistication, loved Sharon Stone because she was pretty and and showed her vagina in a movie. Is Kim Kardashian talented? She's popular in the US and Europe but not so much in the Far East. Kim Kardashian is trying to make inroads there but doesn't seem to have the same success. So who's more sophisticated when Europeans chase Kim Kardashian around when she's only famous because she was friends with Paris Hilton and made a porno? No CGI to blame.

"Sophisticated" is code for only white. "These days" means how they have appeal to international audiences and not only white. They miss the good ole days where only white lives mattered.

You mean like for decades people have been saying Julia Roberts is the greatest actress in the world when she's just a one-trick pony?

Not quite. Film critics have long had favourite actors and actresses, but it wasn't normal for reviews to almost uniformly praise bad films just because they had certain people in the cast. I'm pretty sure I can remember Julia Roberts being in films that got crap reviews. Occasionally you got some people rallying around a bad film, but it wasn't the vast majority of critics.

What I'm talking about is more like with the Ghostbusters remake. It was an audience flop, but a lot of critics gave it rave reviews because it had an all-female cast - some reviewers even said they thought the film was bad but they "had" to give it a good write-up to support women in the film industry.

Or the recent Star Wars films. Daisy Ridley was a completely new actress as were much of the cast, but a lot of critics defended the films despite obvious reasons to criticise them because they "empowered women" or were "diverse".

That's because the alt-right incel boys are being given a voice. Disgruntled white males are an exploitable commodity "these days". Just look at the Star Wars thread where I posted a few examples of many YouTube channels that are supposedly "independent" and act like they're natural and neutral observers but they talk about about the same exact things and they release it all around the same time. Those are the guys that hated on the female-centric Ghostbusters movie. Why? Because it was all women and nothing else. It wasn't bad or good as any other movie can be or not. "Back then" when movies were made for white audiences, Hollywood had a perfect record on movies that were all successes. I loved how one of these channels hated on the part of the last season of Star Wars The Clone Wars. What part was it? It's the part where two characters were obviously Latina women. How absurd that there are Latinas in space. Everyone knows space will be dominated by white men and their culture where aliens will adopt Western mannerisms because all intelligent life in the universe will recognize Western culture as superior.

I don't know anyone that liked the Ghostbusters film, men or women. They complained that it just wasn't funny. These days YouTube has channels posting all kinds of rubbish, if critics start defending films because some people are being prejudiced then no film is going to get a bad review.

I'm not sold on the idea that the majority of people that don't like films like the new Star Wars/Ghostbusters are racist or hate women. It's just an excuse studios wheel out when they put in a poor effort and fans don't swallow it. I think the new Star Wars films did pretty poorly in China compared to Disney's expectations, presumably because the movie-goers thought they were weak rather than because they didn't like the gender or race of the cast.

Look at the difference in worldwide reviews of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel. Both with strong female leads who are Caucasian women. Wonder Woman was generally loved by fans and critics, whereas Captain Marvel only pleased the critics. If individual reviewers had been motivated by misogyny they would have hated both.

When I see negative reviews of films like the new Star Wars, Ghosbusters or Captain Marvel, the most popular are those that analyse the films for what they are. One of the most watched independent film channels on YouTube is RedLetterMedia. They did reviews for Ghostbusters and the Star Wars films that disassembled them and gave fair if jokey reviews. Their review on Ghostbusters was I think the most popular of any of the reviews, similar with the Star Wars reviews.

Who said anything about Ghostbusters being liked? It's just a movie. It's the alt right incel boys that think an all-female cast of Ghostbusters is a sign of the apocalypse. That the problem. The notorious suspects want to spin movies as some litmus test for one's worthy as a human being. It's just a movie. Attacking Brie Larson has become the cause of the alt right incel boys of these very channels to hate. They hate her personally because of her feminist stance and not because Captain Marvel was a bad movie. If it was a bad movie, that's not her fault. She's not in control of the movie's production. So blaming her is an excuse for not liking her personally and not because the movie was bad. These channels are angry because Hollywood is trying to push their woke agenda. Like the alt-right is not trying to force white supremacy onto the world?

Have you watched the movies ? Many of the movies main purpose is promoting a political agenda be it feminism, multiculturalism HBTQ etc and the movies themselves suffer from it. Most people dont care about the race/gender/sexual orientation of the characters unless its clearly forced and made into a thing of itself. The guys that hated on the new Ghost busters still love The alien and Terminator movies, both old movies with strong female protagonists, the difference is that they are believable characters and Ripley is to busy killing aliens to lecture about feminism.

They may not be good movies, but why do they provoke such vitriol? Bad movies are a dime a dozen, and it's not the first time Hollywood has butchered a classic.

Why the need to decry the promotion of a political agenda? Like there weren't politically motivated movies before?

Mace, you've descended into a bit of a strange rant about white supremacists that clearly have nothing to do with the disconnect between reviews from critics and ordinary people on Mulan and other popular films.

I'm sure that some people don't like Brie Larson because of her positions on some issues, but these days most actresses are feminists. Gal Gadot is a feminist - she said that if you're not a feminist you're sexist. That's pretty clear-cut. If it was as simple as "I hate this film because feminism", there's no way there would have been alignment between fans and critics on Wonder Woman. If there's a difference in how Larson and Gadot are viewed, it's probably because the former seems rather bitter and the latter much friendlier.

Also, even if we might agree that sometimes film critics support bad films because of politics, it's hardly groundbreaking for a film about a Chinese story of an Asian woman to have an ethnically Chinese cast or for the lead role to go to a woman, especially when there have been other films on the same subject.

Why the need to decry the promotion of a political agenda? Like there weren't politically motivated movies before?

There was no internet before. If the internet had been established in 1980 you might have seen similar reactions.

Anyway, the fact there are people who dislike (or like) films for stupid reasons isn't news. The disappointing thing is that many critics no longer judge films on whether they're likely to wow audiences but whether they fulfill some abstract criteria.

Yeah and why now do alt-right incels complain? Where's Brie Larson in Captain Marvel forcing her feminists beliefs onto men? Where in the all-female Ghostbusters are they forcing feminist beliefs onto people. Yeah if Alien were made today, the usual suspects would be complaining about Alien too. You don't get it's the incels that are complaining that are forcing their agenda that they say is happening now when it's always been there. Just like there's always been good and bad movies but the incels want to make everyone believe before appealing to international audiences, Hollywood made only good movies and good actors.
