Unfortunately, this remake only scores a 3.5 out of 10 on douban.

It seems good 武俠 (wuxia) movies are rare nowadays. If you haven't seen Brotherhood of Blades 1 and 2, you might want to check them out. They are on youtube. The first one is not english subtitled, while the second one is. The second one is actually a prequel of the first.

It is produce by the infamous wong jing lol, can't take his movies too seriously but just like a "summer hit movie" to watch for fun or in background.

I will have to check them out. I agree that good wuxia seems rare especially in drama land. Most shows that look like it might be wuxia in the trailer ends up long winded romance/political/semi-comdey drama

Well, for me. The 2000s period film base on Jin Yong novel is the best. You name it: Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre 2003,天龙八部 2003, The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2003 etc. Music, theme, cast, acting, wuxia skill effect is best. The newest ver of those film is to much off for me. Cast just pick prettiest, unsuited for role. Where manly actor like Jun Hu?

Chinese acting being so fake is the chronic problem. they have very shallow understanding of the characters in the original novels. without real life experience, they just can't develop their personal character to be themselves in the movies, especially when there is a wide range of subtle emotions. everyone end up being so melodramatic. But movies about modern real life turn to be miles better as they can better relate to.

I have to give it to them, the "free world" is inherently better at producing good actors and good movies due to fewer restrictions.

Come on dude, how much experience do you have with Chinese movies?

You're seriously judging Chinese actors based on some idol movies?

admittedly not as much as I would like, especially wuxia. so far I haven't seen anything remotely measuring up to the ones in the 90s from Hongkong. incredible acting and clever interpretation of the original novels. That makes me less willing to risk watching new ones. It's just hard to go backwards.

I can't check all the 300+ pages on this thread to check if it has been recommended. But I think members a this forum would love my favorite TV show of all time: Battlestar Glactica.

I have watched it 6 times now and it has always been a treasure trove of understanding the mindkind.

Look up 琅琊榜.
nice. thanks! it reminds me of the original 三国演义 tv show, which I really enjoyed. But I have to point out that these shows tend to be good with storyline and great reproduction of lives in the olden days. But there tend to be little character development and acting is largely talking.

to me the pinnacle of wuxia would include:
张敏:倚天屠龙记
张曼玉:新龙门客栈
朱茵:大圣娶亲
you fall in love with these characters because their acting is very exciting as well as convincing.

Funny that you think 倚天屠龙记 has good acting. I remember watching it as a teen and thinking it was an atrocious butchering of the novel. The only reason I won't diss it is because it starred Jet Li.

In the 40 years of Jin Yong movie (not TV series) adaptations, I would say the only one that would count as a good movie is 东方不败. Everything else was just crap.

People tend to romanticize 90's HK cinema, but I first watched them as a mainland youth used to the high-quality works produced in the 80's, and 90% of those HK stuff was trash. That's to be expected of course, since most of those movies were made just to ride on the coattails of some other successes (the gambling series, for example). There were some gems of course, like 大话西游 (1 and 2), 赌侠, the aforementioned 东方不败, the 黄飞鸿 series (at least the first 3).

ANYWAY, if you or anyone else reading this is looking for something new to watch, I highly, highly recommend this:

Probably the best show I've seen in a long while.

I think looking for great acting in wuxia movies is difficult. There is not enough time in 2 hours to develop the characters and also insert enough fight scenes. If they have to remain faithful to Jin Yong (金庸) masterpieces, it's practically impossible. I think the level of acting in wuxia movies when compared to those in Marvel movies or Star Wars or X-Men are not all that different. I don't know if you are fluent in Chinese. If you are, on some levels, many Chinese movies are deeper in that there are a lot of cultural references that are just not available to non-Chinese viewers. Anyway, it could be just me, but I even get bored if the actions slow down too much! :p

I also don't think the number of good actors has anything to do with "freedom." There are and have been plenty of excellent actors, even when Chinese censors were stricter than now. I particularly like the older 張藝謀 (Zhang Yimou) films like 大紅燈籠高高掛 (To Raise the Red Lantern) or 活著 (To Live). In fact, in some sense modern idol worshiping may have taken away from the focus on good acting. But the base is so large in China that there are still plenty of good actors now.

张曼玉:新龙门客栈
If you like this, you might like the remake, 龙门飞甲 (the movie, not the tv series). Unfortunately, I can't find it on youtube currently (used to be there but might have been taken down). You can find lots of online streams if you google it. Even though it's rated lower on douban, I like it better because of its more modern filming techniques. At any rate, you should check out the movies (绣春刀) I suggested above. The acting should be fine.
