I saw The Dark Tower today. I'm not sure why this story resonated with so many people to get them excited for a movie. I haven't read the book so maybe there was more to it but then why didn't they include it in the movie if that's the case. The movie was a short 90+ minutes and nothing deep. It was a very generic good vs evil straight point A to point B story. There's suppose to be a TV series to follow. I hope it's more complex there. Interesting how in this story they talk about "the shine" which is people with psychic abilities. Is it the same thing as in the Shining? All of Stephen King's stories exist in the same universe?

The film is supposedly a sequel to the book canon instead of a straight adaptation. You can't properly adapt several thousand pages of material within an hour and half.

True, but we can expect the plot and story line to be more interesting and complex for 1.5 hours. It can be done.

It is a sifi TV show set in a not too distance version of earth, about 300 years ahead, their technology is very much similar to today's technology, except just a bit more advanced, there is no fantasy stuff like lasers, force field, time travel, faster than light, alternative dimensions etc... when ship need to travel they accelerate half way to destination, then turn around using directional thrusts and accelerate the other way to slow down do destination, in combat ships only uses cannons, rail guns, but that's it.

In this show humanity is out in space, but not yet left the solar system, and there is 2 main factions, the earth government and the mars government, both planet are at cold war with each other, the show follows a group of people that is not part of one faction or the other, but they are caught up in this mess. I highly recommend it, although this is a Western show, but the future they depict have a lot of Chinese influence, you can see Chinese being spoken pretty often, Chinese writing everywhere etc...

I don't know what to say, but don't discount this as a simple cartoon, this show has been a spiritual life changing experience, there is nothing more innovative on TV right now, nothing is taboo (not in a bad way), they explore everything, it feels a bit like South Park, but a lot better.

And I'm still waiting for Netflix to air season 2...and a minor spoiler alert: if you want some more "usual" sci-fi stuff, the ancient + alien origin protomolecules will fit the bill, and it's a story-driving plot device in both the novel version and the TV series, the rest are your more typical human and political dramas in the mix.

I read the Dark Tower back in high school, during one of my Stephen King binges.

Honestly, the guy is not a good writer. The attraction of his horror novels was the way he wove the supernatural into the mundane (i.e. American small towns).

The Dark Tower was his attempt at a fantasy series. Unfortunately, that meant completely doing away with what made his horrors successful in the first place. Without that element, the story was just boring and hard to follow (like his other novels, really).

I loved the Expance. I've already seen all of season 2 already. Although both Earth UN force and Mars MCRN forces are at odds with each other, I like the MCRN better. Earth government are selfish and too trigger happy.
