Is true that Mao tried to form a coalition government with Chiang, but he refused?
And how historically accurate are the rest of the movie?

My guess is both thought themselves as an eventual emperor in China, therefore would not even think about coalition govn't. So both of them "negotiated" half-heartedly. I think both of them wanted to sabotage the negotiation and wanted to shift the blame to the other one. This way, they can all look like an innocent one simply trying to protect himself. Also, none of them believed that the other one was honest about wanting a coalition. So the negotiation was doomed to begin with.

Of course, since Mao won, he can say whatever he wanted...

There are no subtitles and everything is pretty much in Chinese. I would recommend a good understanding of Chinese history from that era to fully understand the movie.

Just watch the movie... my rating... err... 5/10 at best. Because it is a movie, so time is its because restraint. Everything seemed so... what do you call it - Summarized. There is really no building of characters and stuff like that. It is just like reading the content page of a great novel and thats it.

Plus... all the stars as listed in the movie... well, most just appeared once and have a few lines or only one line, and did not leave any deep impression. Actually no one leave any deep impressions in this movie. The only thing I can comment on is the ending song of the movie. That is a cool song, and I loved it.
