This twitter thread explains why the proposed sanctions on Hikivision are akin to an economic nuclear attack. These sanctions would be even heavier than the sanctions on Huawei

"Hikvision, if sanctioned at full force, couldn’t to sell anything to or buy anything from US-friendly countries, or use reputable int’l banks. Its online presence would vanish. Technically, its 40k+ employees could face criminal liability in US. Incalculable reputational damage."

A dark road is ahead if these sanctions will happen, this will most likely be the ignition of an even more confrontational period (insert "I am once again asking for more military spending increase" meme here)

Btw given that this "scoop" from FT was reported by the well-known deep state establishment mouthpiece, Demetri Sevastopulo, I would consider this news as real.

If he is reporting this, it means that the decision has already been taken and they are simply sending a message to prepare the public for the decision

Not yet from what I have seen. I think that the twitter thread I linked makes some good predictions though (at the end). It talks about this action being an escalation, then the political need for Chinese leaders to counter, then the usual US counter because they are thinking that China somehow fired the first shot (yes, they are idiots), and etc.

So its an escalatory spiral until a full blown tech war/decoupling happens. We will see, it all depends on how harsh the sanctions and the enforcement of them will be.

Btw did Hikvision made a big achievement recently? If they are throwing at it an even bigger than Huawei, kitchen sink at it, it means that the company might be have done something really good recently

It is almost 100% related to Ukraine.

Just earlier today, Japan announced they are sending a delegation to Taiwan on Thursday.

They want to punish China for not back stabbing Russia. Also because Russia is slowing grinding Ukrainians down on the Donbas front with destroying logistics and heavy artillery.

Good, if Chinese companies didn't get the message with Huawei, maybe they will get it this time.
