Really interesting stuff, like minority report

What's funny is that, they sent a social worker to this person's house to ask if they need help finding a job.
Reading it, it almost seems like a Xinjiang lite version. You could just do a word/name replacement and I think the article would be come "a harrowing account of invasive CCP oppression".

Ironic thing is that in Minority Report, the programme pretty much worked, and prevented thousands of murders. But because it’s not 100%, they tore it down and let all the would-be murderers out free to kill as they please. Pretty accurate encapsulation of western bleeding heart culture.

CHINESE ARTIFICIAL SUN

Advancing forward! China's man-made sun sets a world record of 100 million degrees and 100 seconds

HEFEI, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists have set a new world record of achieving a plasma temperature of 120 million degrees Celsius for 101 seconds in the latest experiment on Friday, a key step toward the test running of a fusion reactor.

On 28 MAY 2021, the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) at the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP) in Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui Province, set a new world record, successfully achieving a plasma temperature of 120 million degrees Celsius for 101 seconds, and also 160 million degrees Celsius for 20 seconds, extending the previous own record of 100 million degrees Celsius for 20 seconds by five times. This further proves the feasibility of nuclear FUSION energy.

The ultimate goal of EAST, located at ASIPP in Hefei, is to create nuclear FUSION like the Sun, using deuterium abound in the sea to provide a steady stream of clean energy.

It is estimated that the deuterium in one liter of seawater can produce, through fusion reaction, the amount of energy equivalent to 300 liters of gasoline.

Around 300 scientists and engineers mobilized to support the operation of the doughnut-shaped experiment facility. Preparation and upgrading work for the experiment started about a year ago.

"It's a huge achievement in China's physics and engineering fields. The experiment's success lays the foundation for China to build its own nuclear FUSION energy station," said Song Yuntao, director of ASIPP.

In November 2018, EAST generated an electron temperature of 100 million degrees Celsius in its core plasma, nearly seven times the temperature of the Sun's interior. Last year, EAST achieved a plasma temperature of 100 million degrees Celsius lasting for 20 seconds.

The raw materials required for the "artificial sun" are almost unlimited on Earth. Therefore, FUSION energy is considered the ideal "ultimate energy"!

FUSION energy, one of the greatest frontiers of today's physics, requires not only top scientific research ability but also massive experimental instruments.

Since its operation in 2006, the Chinese-designed and -developed EAST has been an open test platform for Chinese and international scientists to conduct fusion-related experiments.

That's a little too powerful to fry an egg.

This is the issue, similar to commercial airplanes. Not even the carrier grade 5-9s works here. I hope people who are working on autonomous driving are on the same page with the airliner certification. It probably takes one fatal accident to bankrupt a company or to bring down a government.

A free market will find the correct price, where allocation of resources are the most efficient.
My friend, a free market is very inefficient. It is inherently unstable, and leads to periodic economic crisis and financial market crashes, the last two in the U.S. was in 2001 and 2008. There are more than dozen of them in the past 100 years in the U.S. along.

The current crisis in the U.S. is only temporarily delayed, only because the U.S. capitalist regime abandoned free market, with massive "socialist-style" government intervention. But being a capitalist economy, the eventual crash is inevitable, perhaps in couple of years.

Socialism is great, but only for the capitalists in the U.S. The rest of the people get free-market exploitation. Thus the K "recovery" in the U.S., with even wider gap between the rich and the poor.

Theoretically yes. But there are 2 main problems that frequently occur in a completely free market.
My friend, it is yes only according to capitalist theory. And the problems you pointed out do happens, not only completely free market, but in highly regulated capitalist market.

There is no free market in modern capitalism. Government intervention everywhere and regulations everywhere. Without those, capitalism would have died long time ago.

But even with those state interventions, economic crisis and market crashes are inevitable, and have been happening about every 10 years. That was predicted by Marxist theory more than 1.5 centuries ago, and remain true to today.

The top two biggest structural problems with ‘pure’ capitalist markets, especially those paired with western liberal democracy are:
1. State capture
2. Monopolistic behaviour
Yes. A capitalist state, in the last analysis, is "an armed body of men defending" the capitalist system, with capitalists as the ruling class. Of course capitalists control everything important in the society, and set up all kinds of laws and policies to benefit themselves. That's a feature of the system, not a bug.

Monopolistic behavior is a natural consequence of capitalist system, as that's the most efficient way for a capitalist to capture super (or monopoly) profits. That behavior leads to economic stagnation domestically and aggression internationally.

The standard old time reply my leftist friend to that is the rightist will say capitalism recovered.

That the market and animal spirits have the ability to bounce back from set backs. In history, all economic contractions in capitalist economies, saw the return of strong growth and rising incomes.

Today some economies in the west may not be doing so great, but the right will say the reason is the left has too much influence. The best example of that is France today.

Today is not the old days, so gotta express this in a different way.

The boom bust cycle of capitalism, that is a feature and not a bug.

That makes more sense perhaps.
